I'm not like a regular coat. I'm a cool coat.

There are two minor drawbacks to real fur coats:

  1. Fur is expensive AF
  2. The ethics of fur coats are questionable at best
But fur is so fluffy and soft! Ugh, dilemmas. EXCEPT! It's a dilemma no longer, thanks to science or something (who is responsible for figuring out a quality faux fur solution?). That's right, faux fur is seriously legit, and it (usually) is less expensive PLUS you don't have to worry about harming animals or PETA throwing paint on you.

Thank brands like Stella McCartney and Shrimps for making faux fur just as viable of an option. Even Topshop and ASOS have quality faux fur coats for decent prices. And I love how colorful all the coats are right now. MSGM has a patchwork style coat, See by Chloé is feeling the pastel pinks, and Trina Turk has a rainbow explosion of a coat for all you attention-getters out there.

So seriously, think about a faux fur coat! They're cozy and warm and totally on trend but forever classic.

What I Wore | Grocery Shopping

J. Crew shirt and skirt

B.P. knit beret (similar)
A new Whole Foods just opened in downtown Los Angeles, so naturally my friend and I had to get all gussied up and buy some fancy wine and cheeses to celebrate. Seriously, could we get more LA bougie? But in all honesty, the DTLA Whole Foods is amazing, and if I had a kitchen I would gladly be spending all my money there (especially since Fresh & Easy is no longer, RIP).

For an evening of sophistication and culture (Whole Foods trip followed by watching a play followed by eating brie and sipping on wine out of red solo cups) I decided to wear my best Los Angeles preppy hipster in autumn uniform. A buttoned-to-the-top gingham shirt (the gingham shirt from J. Crew, to be precise), heeled ankle boots, and a chic chapeau are all essentials to this look. A crossbody bag is the ultimate utilitarian bag for any and all activities, and a bias faux-wrap brocade skirt adds just the right amount of pizazz to a *hip* look.

Do you guys get this dressed up to go grocery shopping? I'm always under the impression that I'm going to meet Andrew Garfield or like my future husband (or are they one in the same?) while running errands, especially if they're checking out the 350 different kinds of cheeses Whole Foods has to offer too. Like, talk about true love.

Vote for the It Girls of 2015

November 13, 2015

Can you believe it's almost the end of 2015? This year has gone by so incredibly fast, and so many memorable moments in the world of fashion and culture! Stars like Lily James broke out onto the scene, old favorite Vanessa Hudgens reinvented her style for the better, and the biggest red carpet events of the year did not disappoint.

As has become an annual tradition on The Fashion Barbie, it's almost time for the year-end countdown of the top It Girls of 2015. Last year saw Star Wars star Lupita Nyong'o reign supreme, but who will take the crown this year?

In order to figure that out, I need your help! Fill out the survey below and tell me who your favorite, most fashionable celebs of the year were so I can narrow the list down to the Top 10. Will Kendall Jenner continue her world takeover with a number one spot? Will sultry Bond girl Lea Seydoux steal the show? For now, the choice is yours!

Trending | Hiking Boots

How Louis Vuitton does utilitarian

Who would have thought that boots would be popular for fall? (That was a joke, btw). First there were daring thigh-high boots, then practical rain boots, and now it seems the hiking boot is the new shoe style du jour.

If you've always longed for a tough girl boot but don't think Doc Marten combat boots are quite your style, hiking boots might just be your thing! They can edge up a frilly frock or go perfectly with a preppy jeans-vest-shirt combo, so whatever your style there's a way to make these boots work. My personal favorite: these Miu Miu boots with shearling lining and a cap toe. Perfect parts fashionable and functional.

No answer on whether or not these shoes would actually be good hiking boots, but they sure do look cute!

November Wishlist

November 6, 2015

Frame Denim coat | Gucci beret and shoes | Topshop Unique sweater | Opening Ceremony skirt | Jennifer Fisher bracelet
Was it intentional that my November Wishlist looks like a Christmas tree? Maybe, maybe not. Clearly that early holiday season advertising has worked, because I've got red and green on the mind. But mostly I'm just so excited for cold weather and sweaters!!!

Seriously, I'm totally digging turtleneck sweaters of all sorts right now; chunky knits as standout pieces and thin turtleneck tees for layering (à la Man Repeller). They say the neck is where 99% of body heat escapes (ok that may not be true) so it's important to keep your neck warm in the most stylish manner possible. This Madewell scarf could also suffice.

Pretty much everything from the latest Gucci collection is on my wishlist, but I'm going to be slightly realistic and only put these glittery golden loafer heels and a red knit beret (that I could totally knit myself using my sixth grade knitting phase skills but like c'mon it's Gucci).

A fit and flare skirt is always a good idea, and I love the rich emerald green hue of this gorgeous Opening Ceremony one. And ever since I did this Get the Look post on Courtney Trop's chic suede coat outfit, I've been dreaming of getting a suede coat of my own. It would be the perfect southern California winter coat!

Vacation Recap | San Francisco Weekend

November 5, 2015

In my senior year I finally got to experience the magic of the Weekender, aka the weekend when USC plays either Stanford or Berkeley and half of the student body travels up to the Bay Area. I got to hang out with friends who are from San Francisco, party it up in the Marina and the Mission District, and of course watch the USC Trojans beat the Cal Bears! All in all, a pretty good weekend!

It was also Halloween, which meant my Chanel Oberlin costume made its debut in downtown SF. Seriously fun times.

Here's my photo recap of the best moments of the weekend, and read on for recommendations of the restaurants and bars we hit up while in the city!

USC/Cal Game

Early on October 31st we took the BART out to Berkeley and traversed campus in search of fun tailgates and cool bars to watch the game (since we didn't buy tickets). We got super yummy burgers at Eureka! and then watched the second half of the game at a dive bar on Telegraph. It was a 50/50 mix of Cal and USC students, so when the final whistle blew we had plenty of people to celebrate with. It was awesome to see our trip up to the bay include a win!

Halloween

After a post-game siesta (so needed) we refueled and headed to the very-happening Mission District for Halloween festivities! Mostly we just bar-hopped, treating ourselves to artisanal cocktails and dancing the night away. There were some pretty kooky costumes (what else would you expect from San Francisco?) and we didn't get back home until 3am (don't even ask me about Uber surge pricing) so I'd say the evening was a success! And people understood my costume, which I always fear that they won't, so that was good!

Sunday Brunch

WEARING sweater and jacket from Anthropologie, BDG skirt, Urban Renewal bandana,
Steve Madden boots, and Rebecca Minkoff purse

On Sunday we recuperated with brunch in the Castro and some Philz Coffee. It was wonderfully gloomy and fall-like (I got hot chocolate!!!) and I just love the energy of San Francisco. It's very different from Los Angeles, and while I love my palm trees and sunny skies, it's nice to get out of LA every once in awhile and see how other cities do it.

After brunch most of our friends hit the 5 for a long day of driving, but my friend Steph and I didn't fly home until Monday, so we went shopping at Union Square in the evening and caught the last inning of the World Series at a bar in the Marina District.

And now, back to reality!

Lindsey's San Francisco Recommendations:

  • Philz Coffee lived up to its Instagram hype
  • For a delicious brunch or any other meal of the day, we were extremely satisfied with Chow in the Castro
  • Smuggler's Cove specializes in rum drinks and is a tropical oasis in the midst of Fog City, but it's definitely more of a hangout spot than a dance party
  • Zero Zero has wonderful food and killer drinks (seriously, the absinthe-based Violet Death in the Afternoon is not for the faint of heart)
  • Another great spot for trendy drinks: The Dorian. Didn't have a chance to check out their food other than a brussel sprouts appetizer, but if that was any indication their food is probably amazing too
  • If you're looking for a wildly fun dive bar or a place to play beer pong, Bar None in the Marina District is the perfect spot

What I Wore | Black & White

November 4, 2015

Look who finally got a red Starbucks cup!
After an amazing weekend in San Francisco for the USC/Cal game (we won, obvi) it's time to come back to reality and get on that senior year grind until Thanksgiving. With the clock set back an hour though, it seems LA has finally gotten the memo that it's supposed to be fall, so it blessed us all with breezy temperatures in the 60s (!!!) Bring on the fur coats, amiright?

To celebrate the beginning of November and the excitement that maybe I will have the chance to wear coats and sweaters after all, I did something very rare: I wore all black. GASP! Don't worry, it is just a phase. I just wanted to wear my thigh-high socks and thought it would be very chic to pair them with my polka dot babydoll dress and a double-breasted coat. I swiped on some bright red lipstick to bring some color to the look, and accessorized with the gorgeous new matte red Starbucks holiday cups. Peppermint mocha time, yessssss.

I'll be posting more pics from my SF trip as well as my November Wish List later this week, but in the meantime check out the look!
