NYFW - part II

September 9, 2013

The collections continue on, and I am seeing some trends solidify more and more, while new ones emerge as the days go on. Here are some memorable shows from the past few days:

ALEXANDER WANG
In the days leading up to Alexander Wang's Spring 2014 presentation for his own label, some worried that the designer's time at Balenciaga would actually detract from his namesake collection. When you're designing for a storied fashion house, why worry about a contemporary collection? It's good to know, after seeing his designs for next spring, that Wang hasn't forgotten where he's come from, and his clothes were as urban cool as ever. Easy-going slouchy pants in luxe fabrics, precariously-unbuttoned shirts, and the coolest platform Mary Janes you will ever see (not to mention the "Parental Advisory" sweatshirt that is sure to become the new Kenzo tiger sweatshirt among street style stars). Another successful collection under Wang's belt.

JEN KAO
Jen Kao's dresses were absolutely lovely. Instantly wearable but also beautiful and original, and with a hint of 60s flower child but in cool, modern colors. I just really enjoyed the overall vibe of the collection - the textiles, the colors, the flowing stick-straight hair on the models, even the pops of mustard shoes and flowers throughout. Also, there is a dress made entirely of Bunnicula illustrations (if you don't know Bunnicula, I pity you) and for that I absolutely love this whole presentation.

OPENING CEREMONY
Cool. That is always the best way to describe Opening Ceremony. When the company started a little over a decade ago they changed how people in New York and Los Angeles shopped and I really do think OC was a big part of the recent successes of contemporary and "cusp" brands. Now the brand has debuted its very own collection, for the first time on a runway, and it's as cool as ever. Oversized ponchos in punchy prints mixed with ultra-minis, plenty of pockets, and slouchy-relaxed maxi dresses ruled OC's first runway collection, and everything was, dare I say, totally cool.

Having a Moment: Beanies

March 5, 2013

Personally I am not the biggest fan of beanies -I'd much rather wear a knit beret- but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the moment in street style they are having right now.

I didn't quite realize the style power of the beanie until walking into LA's new Topshop store at the Grove -FINALLY! I may add- and seeing a whole wall full of beanies, knit in every possible color, some with cheeky words like "GEEK" and "I♥LA" written on them. My friend bought two to add to her already-large collection of knit caps.

It seems that everyone is a fan of the beanie trend, though, even street style stars. Especially street style stars. I swear, for every 5 pictures Tommy Ton took, at least one of them featured a beanie-sporting stylista.

NYFW FALL 2013: day one

February 8, 2013

Fashion Week in New York kicked off yesterday with shows and presentations by Creatures of the Wind, Erin Fetherston, BCBG, and more. The standouts from day one, in my opinion, were Creatures of the Wind, Tanya Taylor, and Timo Weiland

Out on the Streets

October 5, 2012

With the rise of street style photography, the front row fashionistas and their inventive ensembles have become as important as the shows they watch during Fashion Week. Tommy Ton, with his ability to capture unique details, patterns, and personalities, has elevated certain extravagant ladies to street style icons. Here are some of the favorite looks outside of the Spring 2013 shows.

From Paris With Love

October 3, 2012

Bumble bees, renewable energy, and Edie Sedgwick. Paris was an abundance of eclectic inspirations, but all in all some pretty strong conceptual shows came through.

Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga experimented with sensuality by accentuating the curves and silhouettes of women. Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld, with a solar panel runway and windmills lining the Grand Palais, was influenced by renewable energy and energy in general, in more figurative meanings of the word. At Louis Vuitton, as with his synonymous collection, Marc Jacobs focused on the Mod movement of the Sixties with day-glo yellow checkerboard prints. Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton used bees as her main inspiration- honeycomb hexagons, amber shades, and beekeeper headwear.

Paris, as usual, was full of hits. Here's the rundown of my favorite shows. What shows did you most enjoy?

Balenciaga

Cacharel

Chanel

Lanvin

Louis Vuitton

Alexander McQueen
 Valentino

Groovy, Baby

September 22, 2012

Marc Jacobs had been hinting at it with his subtle references to Edie Sedgwick, but not until Milan was the message so clear: Spring is all about the Mod Movement.

That means plenty of metallic discs, pop-art flowers, and ultramini mini dresses.

Moschino

Prada

Jason Wu and the Taboo

September 10, 2012

As one of the First Lady's go-to designers, Jason Wu's collections are generally pretty conservative. But Wu is A-list material, and as the saying goes in Hollywood, sex sells. Inspired by Helmut Newton and the idea of exploring taboos, Wu gave backless dresses, seductive leather, and ankle-cuff heels. Every model's face was obscured by thin black netting, giving each look a coy, coquettish feel. And with Wu still being Wu, there were plenty of sensual looks with restraint, like his signature short suits in contrasting black and white, or a sleek power dress with jet-black leather inserts.

While Michelle Obama isn't a bad client to have, it is evident from this collection that Jason Wu is looking to expand his clientelle to more youthful celebrities. And with to-die-for gauzy dresses for his grand finale, Young Hollywood will be fighting over these sexy, beautiful dresses.
