There are few historical figures that have continually captivated me quite like Marie Antoinette. My first true introduction to the French queen was Sophia Coppola's fabulous film Marie Antoinette, which, granted, was not the most historically accurate, but did a wonderful job of capturing the pastel aesthetic of life as an absolutist monarch living the life in Versailles.
It was in middle school history that I learned the true fate of Marie Antoinette, and it really pissed me off to learn that such a chic individual was the target of such loathing and unified hatred. Homegirl was just trying to keep up with the other royals at court and wear the latest in mile-high hair fashions—heck, she was even trying to give everyone in France cake or Laduree macarons or something—and they return the favor by sending her straight up to the guillotine. #Rude. The way it was explained in my history class, Marie Antoinette was a cartoonish villain, doomed for her frivolous ways and the figurehead of a pretty intense smear campaign.
With Coppola's vision being a bit too hazy and my history books too simplified and one-sided, I found myself dissatisfied with my knowledge of the life of Marie Antoinette. So I turned to outside reading, first with Caroline Weber's fabulous book Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution, and later Atonia Fraser's Marie Antoinette: The Journey, upon which the Coppola film is based. Antoinette is the one historical figure who I will read whole books about and the first to make me realize how complicated issues of the past are. It's easy to dismiss her as a ditzy princess who focused too much on fashion and not enough on politics, but that's ignoring the fact that her husband was just not suited to be a ruler. More than anything, Antoinette fell victim to an outdated form of government simply by being born into it, and there was nothing she could do to keep the tides of history from changing.
Regardless of what you believe her political legacy is, there is no denying that Marie Antoinette was and remains one of the most influential fashion figures of all time. No one could rock panniers and powdered wigs quite the way that she did, and her influence in all things fashion echoed throughout France and Europe.
Over two-hundred years later, designers are still constantly inspired by Antoinette. From the pastel-colored hues that Coppola's film made integral to the image of Antoinette to gravity-defying skirts and headwear, there is no denying the staying power of Marie Antoinette's fashion choices. Every other season it feels like brands like Chanel and Dior are drawing from the fashions at Versailles for their collections (in 2013, Karl Lagerfeld even staged a show in the gardens of Versailles).

If Marie Antoinette were alive and well today in 2015, what would she be wearing? My guess: decadent brands like Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino mixed with innovative creations from Junya Watanabe and other avant-garde designers that aren't afraid to push the boundaries of fashion. In other words, Marie Antoinette would be a full-on fashion risk-taker. She'd be front row at all the couture shows wearing custom creations, and she would be on the front page of every street style blog stealing the spotlight with her fun headpieces and crazy outfits that would put the likes of Anna Dello Russo to shame.
Like the sound of that? Here's how to get the look of a Modern-day Marie Antoinette for yourself! Through on your most inventive outfit, take a 'gram of you dining on macarons at Bottega Louie (in a Coppola-approved dreamy filter, no less), and live the good life! Just watch out for any unruly citizens looking to take out well-dressed rulers.

On the final day of 2014 we bid adieu to 365 days full of ups and downs and memorable moments. We also celebrate the top It Girl of 2014, a coveted title only one starlet can possess. Last year saw Jennifer Lawrence reign supreme, but this year a brand new name has earned the top spot.
What exactly is an It Girl, though? What do I look for when compiling my annual year-end list? She's got to have name-recognition, of course, and a number of successes and achievements throughout the year; 2014's list consists of the top actresses, models, singers, and even an international lawyer and human rights activist. As this is a fashion blog, she's got to be a fashion girl and a trendsetter. And she can't just wear whatever is the most popular—no, she must have a unique style that reflects her individual personality.
In other words, an It Girl has to have influence. Over her respective industry, over fashion, over the world. Celebrities have an incredibly unique power in order to enact change because they are so well-known and in the public sphere, and I think there's something to be said for a celebrity who takes advantage of those opportunities to make a difference.
It's been a turbulent year to say the least. I don't speak politics on this blog very but you'd have to be living under a rock if you disagree with that statement. I'm no celebrity but I try to make a difference where I can, in whatever small way I can impact the world, and I am envious of celebrities who truly have the star power to make a true difference.
There's the notion that an It Girl has to be cool and effortless, but I have begun to find a lack of effort incredibly overrated. Why can't we value hard work and strong ambition and the desire to want something? And why must an It Girl only be someone who wears floppy hats and looks impeccably stylish wherever she goes? Why can't she be fashionable and influential in that regard, but also something more than that?
It is for all these reasons that there is no better choice for 2014's Top It Girl than Lupita Nyong'o, the breakout star of last year's 12 Years a Slave and one of the most influential young actresses that I have ever seen.
When I first watched 12 Years a Slave I was instantly drawn to Nyong'o's character of Patsey. By the time I had watched the film Lupita was already garnering plenty of Oscar buzz (she later took home the little golden statue and a number of other awards for her supporting role) and I was eager to see her performance. The character of Patsey is probably only on screen for about 15 minutes, but Nyong'o's portrayal was so beautiful and sad that afterwards I immediately went to research the fate of the real-life Patsey. The most frustrating part: her life after Solomon passes through remains a mystery. But that Nyongo's portrayal of the character had me researching Patsey and Solomon and their stories in the wee hours of the night was truly an accomplishment. It is not often that I am so deeply moved by a film.
During awards season, Nyong'o proved that she was just as moving off the screen as she was on it. She deservedly won countless awards for her role in 12 Years a Slave and dazzled the world with her bright red carpet looks and her dazzling personality. I was moved to tears during some of her acceptance speeches, where she both acknowledged the hard work and drive that got her to this point and encouraged others to follow their dreams. And I know that many actors and Hollywood types have encouraged younger generations to do the same, but it felt distinctly genuine when coming from Nyong'o.
Here is a woman who has proven to be a role model in every sense of the word. And really, that seems to be the theme of the Girls of 2014 list. Nyong'o has taken her newfound celebrity status as an opportunity to make a change and serve as a role model for women and for people of color. She's given powerful speeches on women's rights (check out her keynote speech at the Massachusetts Conference for Women) and she's taking a public stand on cases of police brutality and discrimination. In all those instances she speaks of the topics she is addressing with intelligence and poise.

She donned looks from all the top designers, especially Miuccia Prada. Nyong'o sat front row at fashion week shows and got invites to insider events like the Met Gala and the CFDA Awards. She's not afraid to push the envelope with her fashion choices and she knows what her style is. She was named one of Glamour's Women of the Year, People's Most Beautiful Person of 2014, and has a modelling gig with Estee Lauder. She covered Vogue, Marie Claire, and Glamour, and starred in Miu Miu's Spring ad campaign. She's a fashion It Girl if there ever were one.
Nyong'o is a rare breed of celebrity that we don't see very often. She's as radiant as the sun and she's constantly aware of the hard work that got her to where she is and how fortunate she is to be where she is. So many people take their positions in life for granted, and it is truly refreshing to see someone who both enjoys her status as celebrity and is aware that it is a fortunate lifestyle.
So with an Oscar and a number of other accolades under her belt, what's next for Nyong'o in the new year? How about a top-secret role in the new Star Wars film? Little has been revealed about the film and we still don't know who Nyong'o will be in the new movie, but a new Star Wars is huge and Nyong'o is going to continue to garner international attention for her part in one of the largest film franchises of all time. She's also the voice of Rakcha in next year's live-action version of The Jungle Book. Between those two big films, Nyong'o is a star that will only continue to rise in 2015.

I can honestly say that this Oscars ceremony was the best I have seen in a long time.
Yes, the awards ceremony had its awkward moments (we're looking at you guys, John Travolta and Jamie Foxx) but everyone looked beautiful, no one was played out by the music, all the winners were deserving of their recognition, and Ellen absolutely killed it as host - she also temporarily killed Twitter with what is now the most retweeted picture ever (beating out the "Four More Years" picture of President Obama and First Lady Michelle).

There weren't any real surprises with who won the big awards (other than the fact that American Hustle was shut out completely, maybe) but I was so happy to see people like Lupita Nyong'o (who gave an incredible and inspiring speech), Spike Jonze, and "Let It Go" songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (congrats on the EGOTs!) walk up to the stage to accept the coveted trophy man. Hearing Matthew McConaughey end his acceptance speech with his famous "Alright, alright, alright" was the icing on the delightfully refreshing cake that was this evening's Oscar ceremony.
Asides from the fact that all the winners seemed to be the ones who truly deserved the awards - there were no dark horse winners - the ceremony was just really fun, in a way it had probably tried to be last year with Seth MacFarlane but as you know, failed. Celebrities took selfies and ate pizza while in designer gowns, Ellen poked fun at Jennifer Lawrence for tripping last year (and again on the red carpet tonight) and collected money to pay for said pizza in Pharrell's now infamous hat. The musical performances were all great, from Pharrell's colorful dancing number to Vampire Weekend's Ezra playing guitar alongside Karen O to, well, Bono.
The ceremony's theme of the night - heros - was incredibly appropriate, as the films this year celebrated heroes of all shapes and sizes, with both superpowers and everyday abilities. There was a triumphant feel to the award show and the winning films - "Let It Go" is the ultimate jam for anyone who has ever felt like they don't belong; Gravity and 12 Years a Slave are both (but in very different ways) stories of perseverance and survival; Dallas Buyers Club a tale of being absolutely who you are and learning to live life despite its adversities.
Truly an inspirational and unforgettable year for film. It's certainly been a while since I have felt so pleased with the events of the Oscars, from the winners to the ceremony to of course, the dresses...

The trend of the evening came in two colors: nude and navy. The majority of women wore soft, blush-hued gowns like the gorgeously detailed Armani Prive dress that Cate Blanchett wore. Kate Hudson looked phenomenal in a cream dress by Versace Atelier and was perhaps one of the best-dressed women of the evening. Kristen Bell looked every bit the princess in a sweeping Roberto Cavalli gown. A number of other actresses wore nude colors, but these three were the best of the bunch by far. Some looks were a bit too nude, in that the ladies needed to spruce up their lipstick or have some sort of pop of color to make their looks stand out.
Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams, bost nominees for best actress, wore stunning shades of midnight blue to the ceremony. The color is rich and statement-making on its own, and both women let their gorgeously-colored dresses do the talking.
The color trends of the evening carried into menswear as well. Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, and Ryan Seacrest wore cream colored suit jackets, while Kevin Spacey wore an elegant navy tux. Aside from the unconventional shorts tuxedo that Pharrell wore, the men were looking excellently dapper!

These guys were the looks that stirred the most controversy when watching the red carpet at the sorority house and on the internet.
Charlize's invisible straps were just kind of odd and many people said they her dress totally looked like the horns Maleficent has (would have been perfect if Angie had worn this though!). I personally thought Emma Watson's edgy look, but my sisters were not fans of the messy ponytail. I think it looked strange from certain angles, but when I saw it I liked it.
Kerry Washington looked absolutely radiant - seriously, she was on her A-game for hair and makeup - and its hard to criticize what a woman wears while pregnant, but the shape of her dress was just a bit odd, and I hated that weird pin thing. Also, the dress was wrinkled. Always a bad look.
Lastly, I liked Anna Kendrick's look but thought the red detailing at the waist was weird. I would have liked it better in black, or white even. The maroon color was just not doing it for me.

On an evening of gorgeous dresses, newcomer and Oscar winner (!!!) Lupita Nyong'o stood above the rest as the night's best dressed starlet. She's dazzled all season long but tonight was truly her Cinderella moment.
In an aptly-colored baby blue dress by Prada, Nyong'o floated down the red carpet and captivated everyone with her stunning looks and her lovely and humble acceptance speech. She kept the accessories light, wearing only gold rings and bracelets - including a ring with her family's totem on it. She said that the color of her dress reminded her of Nairobi. I love that her outfit had so many personal touches to it. I even loved her headband, which people had mixed opinions on.
And of course, her Clarins lipgloss which she memorably handed to Ellen, is probably being sold out as we speak. If you were wondering why Lupita's been the one everyone's been talking about, hopefully your questions have been answered after watching her tonight. Her speech was eloquent as they have been all awards season, and she really is the type of celebrity you want to root for.
My favorite Lupita moment of the night, though? Seeing her (and Amy and Meryl) get down to Pharrell when he performed "Happy". Girl can jam, and I loved that her dress could move with her dancing!

The 70s have been on a run these past few years, thanks in part to some of the movies that have come out recently. Argo, the Ben Affleck directed flick about the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1979, won the Oscar for Best Picture, and David O'Russell's American Hustle is nominated for the Academy's highest honor - we'll see if it wins this weekend. I was not entirely impressed with either film (too much hype can be a bad thing, I've learned) but I was enthralled by the costumes and the style of the decade.
The 70s were indeed a tumultuous decade full of scandal and strife (Argo) but also extravagance and glamour (American Hustle). Revolution was everywhere, whether it was a country fighting for independence or women fighting for equal rights. The 70s were loud and full of liberation, and the clothes were as wild and ever-changing as the times.
And it's no shock that with a recent cinematic fascination with the decade a resurgence in fashion trends from the 70s has come about. Halter tops, shearling coats and jackets, silk neck ties, patchwork denim, aviators...there's no end to the inspiration.
Coach's first-ever ready-to-wear collection felt like an experiment in 70s-revival, with an earthy color palette and enough tan suede and fringe to costume the cast of That 70s Show. Miuccia Prada blended the 1930s Weimar Republic and the 1970s for her fall collection at Prada. The geometric prints and fire engine red furs were bold enough for Amy Adam's character in American Hustle to fawn over, surely.
Prada is not a show that you immediately comprehend. Miuccia is an expert of creating thoughtful and at times confusing clothing that takes time to fully muster up a feeling about. Generally I get super excited for the Prada show and then turn away after the live stream has finished feeling a bit disappointed. It's never what I expect and I can never quite understand it the first time around. And if I'm being completely honest, the clothes are sometimes not the most generically beautiful, which is of course what makes them so difficult to digest on first viewing.
For the Fall 2014 show we had a bit of a hint as to what it was going to look like a few weeks ago during Men's Fashion Week, where several female models came out in looks of a very similar color palette to the collection today. Tim Blanks described Thursday's show as "Act II" in his style.com review, with this being the second installment to be inspired by the German avant-garde movement in in particular Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1972 film The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant.
There was a mix of time periods here - on the one hand I could totally see Amy Adam's character from American Hustle fawning over the shearling coats in vibrant colors and the disco print silk dresses; on the other, there were the drop waists and fringe details of the Weimar era, where German avant-gardism flourished.
While not the cotton candy colored collection that was Spring 2014, fall feels very bold and glamorous in an entirely different way. And actually, I think this is one of the most "understandable" collections that Miuccia has produced in a while. That doesn't make it any less intellectual, but it is stunning and I can see that more easily with this collection. Which probably means I'll only love it even more over time.

The overarching theme of spring 2014 has been very youthful, and what is more youthful than being in peak physical condition and getting sporty? Whether you are a Sochi-bound Olympian or a total couch potato, you can at least dress the part of the stylish athlete.
Mesh, jersey numbers, tube socks, sneakers, and more were spotted on the spring runways. Paired with slicked-back hair and a bold lip to keep the look from appearing too after-6th-period-gym, this look is stylish, edgy, and - dare we say - practical!
Listening to her eloquent and charming acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress in a Film at Saturday's SAG Awards, I couldn't help but to fall in love with the rising star that is Lupita Nyong'o.
The breakout star of the critically-acclaimed 12 Years a Slave has wowed us all with her on-screen performance; her flawless fashion choices have landed her on countless best-dressed lists; her stunning beauty has landed her a Miu Miu campaign. She's also a Yale graduate and speaks with the utmost articulacy.
Basically, if you aren't a fan of Lupita by now, you should be.
With a well-deserved SAG win under her belt now, Nyong'o has the Academy Awards to look forward to, where she's been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. I am already excited to see what fabulous dress she will wear to Hollywood's biggest night.
In February, Nyong'o will star in Non-Stop alongside Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore, and I know we will be seeing her in many more films to come. This girl has true star power.

Nyong'o's style is simple and streamlined - she prefers bold, attention-grabbing colors over busy prints or embellishments, and you can always count on her to arrive in a unique silhouette; she rocks a cut-out dress like no other.
A personal favorite of mine (and every best-dressed list, for that matter) is the Ralph Lauren cape dress she wore to the Golden Globes. She looked like a regal queen, and let the vibrant red of her dress - along with matching lipstick - do the talking. The look was so stunning that Amy Adams had to forgo the red cape that she had originally planned on wearing over her dress.

My roommate Carissa once told me that she will never wear a piece of clothing with a face on it. It's kind of like wearing part of a person's soul. So maybe Spring's Prada coats are not for her.
But shows like Prada did have us seeing double - double faces, that is. Models sported painted women on coats and skirts. Not the most subtle of prints, of course, but the dresses were perfect for the fashion fearless.
The trend of incorporating faces (and facial features) into clothing is far from over. Anna Wintour stirred up fashion critic controversy with the furry and face-printed Prada coat she wore to the Girls Season Three Premiere Party a few weeks ago.
Back on the runways, designers like Jean Paul Gaultier and Stella McCartney have been similarly inspired by portraits, turning artistic interpretations of faces into fashionable prints. These more abstracted versions translate better to everyday wear, and work as statement pieces if you are looking for a way to liven up your otherwise simple outfit.

Pink pastel coats seem to be all the rage right now. Last week when passing by Topshop at the Grove (aka one of the best shopping destinations on the planet) all the mannequins were wearing pastel pink coats and dresses - paired with festive holiday sparkles, of course.
The same styles were seen on the Fall 2013 runways at shows like Carven, Prada, and Jonathan Saunders.
So how does one wear a pastel pink coat without looking like a total cupcake? Take some cues from these guys!

When wearing an oversize coat that is rosy-colored as a fluffy piece of cotton candy, it is best to balance the piece out with simple, sleek separates in neutral colors (like black and white, as the street style stars and bloggers have so wonderfully demonstrated). Menswear inspired accessories like brogues or straightforward boxy bags also counteract the "girly" color if you are worried about this look being too girly.

There are a lot of things about tourists that drive us locals absolutely insane, but the worst thing in the world has got to be their god-awful fashion sense. Fanny packs, socks with sandals, unironic Hawaiian shirts - the whole thing is an interesting sight (but not in a good way).

For so long I've been sure that these were the clothes of the outsider, the stranger, the person who comes and actually stays at the fancy hotel that my friends and I occasionally sneak into. And now the tables have turned, and these tacky tourist staples are actually cool? No freakin' way.
Of course, where the tourist wears these garments out of comfort, utility, and mistaken stylishness, the fashion-savvy artfully arrange their fanny packs and visors with sleek, minimalist jumpsuits and dresses to achieve the ultimate fashion equilibrium between utterly cool and hopelessly dorky. Not an easy accomplishment, I must say, but even I'll admit they look pretty awesome.
Marc Jacobs had been hinting at it with his subtle references to Edie Sedgwick, but not until Milan was the message so clear: Spring is all about the Mod Movement.
That means plenty of metallic discs, pop-art flowers, and ultramini mini dresses.

Minimalism has come and gone (thank goodness) so that extravagant fashions can once again reign supreme. Fall has given us plenty of baroque-inspired glitz and glamour, and even accessories are wildly whimsical. Sweet and fabulous all at once, this is a truly Great Shoe.
