A few years back it was all about citruses. Lemons, limes, and oranges—oh my! Cherries had their time in the sun, too. But now, my friends, it is all about the tropical pineapple in clothing.
Quirky fashion brand MSGM based a whole collection on the pineapple, and everyone from Tory Burch to Charlotte Russe is jumping on the trend. Both high fashion and high street brands are fascinated with the tropical fruit. I must say, it's a rather strange fruit, but it does make for an exciting print on a button-down shirt or sweater.
Perfect for warm summer weather!

It seems that the fashion Powers that Be are really into destroying their clothes. Distressed jeans, patchwork details, paint splatters, you name it. Frayed edges are just the latest in a long list of distressed trends, but know that there is an art to this look. One cannot simply throw on a western-style fringe jacket and call it a day. No, this season's fringe is more of an artful undoing than flapper girl. Undone edges, I'd call it.
Like this Proenza Schouler dress below, where it looks like the dress is simply unravelling into perfect fringes as if it were taken off the loom midway through. Or the tweed looks at Chanel Haute Couture, where what would once be your grandmother's tweed jackets dissolved into 90s-style crop tops (Grams definitely would not approve, but it does look pretty cool).

If undone edges aren't your thing, just add a bit of fringe here and there for the Spring 2015 take on the texture. Like the neckline of your dress or the hem of your tissue skirt, like Sportmax and Valentino have opted to do.
No matter how you fringe it, there's more to life on the fringe than suede and flapper dresses. Go for a modern, urban twist on the style and you will look 100% certified fresh.

Marc by Marc Jacobs has always been a line that is obsessed with youth culture - from fall's 70s fare to the grunge-y 90s. Spring 2014 seems to be about the eighties, in particular the high school fashions of the notoriously funky decade. The colorful athletic tracksuits done in luminous silks, the experimentations with menswear, the heightened reputation of the peppy cheerleader - the Marc by Marc girl this season is all about experimenting with her style while she tries to find where in the high school world of craziness she fits in.
In all honesty Tory Burch's spring 2014 collection was nothing earth-shattering. The clothes were her typical brand of preppy infused with a world-traveler edge, this time in fitting garden greens and pristine whites. Mainly I just wanted to talk about the super awesome fancy fanny-pack-like purse belts. You may not know this, but sorority girls have an unhealthy obsession with the tacky tourist butt bags. All these Tory bags need are monogrammed Greek letters and sorority girls everywhere will be fainting with glee.
Lim explained that his collection was inspired by the earth. I don't exactly know how literally we are supposed to take that statement - on one hand, there are metallics and seismic prints that literally resemble the natural world; on the other hand, there is something so simply grounded about this collection that is really drawing me in. Lim is a master of wearability without predictability, meaning his looks are simultaneously comfortable and new and exciting, always slightly pushing the boundary but not busting down any walls. And to be honest I really do love that about his clothes. It's the kind of stuff that actually sells, and there is something to be said for an artist who knows how to make something that is both beautiful and commercial.
A fascination with swimwear and surfer style has remained constant throughout the past few seasons, with all sorts of garments being made of neoprene and other swim-like textiles. Tommy Hilfiger is the latest (but certainly not the last, I assume) to be inspired by those who live endless summers. There were the literal translations - fabulous neon one-pieces and pants slightly unzipped and folded over to mimic the surfer post-hitting-the-waves - as well as more subtle accents - neon neoprene stripes added to jeans and sweatshirts, rashguard-like tops turned into ultra-hip dresses. The overall effect was sporty and chic, sure to make a splash for surfers and land lovers alike.

Back in the days of nap time and recess, backpacks were a big deal. Usually I purchased one with a Disney princess or Barbie on it - and bonus points if I could find a matching lunchbox. Sometime during middle school I decided to discard my two-shoulder book bag for a cooler, more sophisticated tote bag. Back in my day, there were only two options for backpacks: overly-childish cartoon-themed bags or painstakingly-plain Jansport sacs.
If I had been offered the cool vintage-inspired and luxe leather backpacks as an adolescent, I don't think I would have ever ditched them. Backpacks are suddenly cool again, and thank goodness, because they are great for your shoulders!
Steve Madden, Tory Burch, and Christopher Kane have all hopped on the backpack trend, ensuring that there is a bag for every style of girl.
Of course, I just found a great black leather tote bag by Kelsi Dagger at Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale, so I'll be sticking to my purses for a little longer, but I do love the resurgence of backpacks lately.

In the heat of summer it appears we have much in common with the wild animals of the African savannas. We flock to watering holes (pools, lakes, oceans, rivers) to refresh and replenish our thirst (preferably with cool tropical drinks and trashy novels to keep us company). It only makes sense that we draw inspiration from one of the inhabitants of the African plains - the mighty Pink Flamingo!
I'm always a fan of pink (it comes with the fashion barbie territory) and I love a good novelty print, so these flamingo picks are a match made in heaven. But seriously, I've been seeing birds everywhere I go. At Topshop last week there was a whole shelf of flamingo jewelry, and Tory Burch has a whole collection of flamingo-print clothes and accessories (in hot pinks and in cool blues). Or, if you just want to emulate the beta-carotene pink of the fancy birds, Tom Ford has a lipstick color inspired by flamingo plumes!
The final hair frontier for me, though, was braids.
To be entirely honest, up until a few months ago I considered myself completely inept with weaving my hair back and forth. For whatever reason the concept was quite challenging. I've mastered the standard braid over the past few months and have recently learned how to do a nice fishtail braid. French braids have proven to be the most difficult, but I am determined to teach myself the art of the French braid by the summer.
I think Shoshanna of Girls may have been the divine inspiration for my braid craze. That girl somehow pulls off the whackiest hairstyles and I love it. Absolutely love it.
Elsewhere, runways can't get enough of braids.

Though not a surfer myself, I've grown up around the surf culture due to friends and family and have always been fascinated by the oceanic sport. There's something so beautiful and zen-like about surfing, even just watching it from the shore. Tory Burch's blog recently featured these photographs by Thomas and Tiffany Campbell, surf film creators. They are so nostalgic and yet so current at once. The warm corals of Thomas Campbell's studio contrasted against the azures of the sea. So lovely.
Summertime and the livin' is sooo easy. Biking around, European football tournaments, finishing dresses in record timing. Ah, the life is good! Even if you aren't traipsing around, celebrating the beginning of a wonderful summer, look at these images to get you in the oceanic state of mind.
