The Sunglasses Trend You'll Either Love or Hate

There is no middle ground

I love sunglasses. They're a simple accessory that has the power to change the feel of a whole outfit, and there are so many shapes, colors, and styles to choose from! I guess I have a good face shape for sunglasses, too, because most of the time they don't look awkward on me (except for those rounded Ray-Bans that everyone has, they make me look like John Lennon and not in a cool way).

So when a new sunglasses trend takes over, I take notice. I obsessed over the Dior So Real shades that everyone wore last year. I was ecstatic when my mom found her old wayfarers from the 80s at the height of that trend a few years back (Vintage! So cool). And now, I'm noticing a new trend that people seem to either absolutely adore or completely loathe: oval sunglasses.

Acne debuted a pair of white rounded sunglasses last year, and the fashion crowd quickly clamored to get their hands on them. Since then, everyone from Elizabeth & James to Saint Laurent to Topshop has unveiled a pair of oval shades.

I think they look cool, but you have to wear them with a certain edge. I love them with rocker tees and boyfriend jeans, or an oversized blazer and menswear-inspired slides. Basically, you need to look cool and confident to pull these off, because they aren't for the fashion faint of heart. These are Fashion sunglasses, with a capital F, so if you're going in on this trend, you need to go all in.

I haven't actually tried this style on myself—I'm more of a cateye girl myself—and while I don't think I'll be investing in a designer pair, maybe I'll pick up a Forever21 pair if I find myself heading to Coachella last minute.

  1. I haven't tried oval sunglasses yet but I want to try. Not all sunglasses look good on me so I like to stick to my current Ray-bans and not venture out like I want to.
