I Think I'm A Skort Girl Now

April 18, 2022

Fashion Magazine | Zara | Versace 2014 | Year Of Ours

Back in the elementary school days, I was all about a good skort. They were ideal for dressing girly and cute while still being able to spontaneously do a cartwheel. I wore them on playdates. While playing sports. Swimsuit variations to the beach. Name an occasion and I had a skort to match.

Somewhere between fifth grade and now, I stopped wearing skorts (aside from the athletic variety for tennis and golf) and they went out of style anyway. For years, I had to pick a side of the shorts vs. skirt debate every day. It was devastating.

Over the past few months, I've noticed that the skort has had a major resurgence. It began in the athleisure space with inventions like the Exercise Dress (of which I own 2) and now has blossomed into a full-blown movement. It helps that the micro-mini skirt trend is a thing and that not all of us (namely, anyone with a butt) are comfortable rocking ultra-minis sans some sort of booty coverage. The skort has thus become the perfect workaround for girls who want to wear the trendy styles without flashing the entire world.

So join me in embracing the skort once more. I've even rounded up some styles for you to shop and try the trend for yourself!

Cute Swimsuits Under $100

June 13, 2021

Wearing Aerie swimsuit top and bottoms

Summer is here, my friends. I've gotten sunburnt despite wearing SPF 70, dove into freezing cold water because it seemed like a good idea as I was sweating in the sun, and had my fair share of hard seltzers already. I've also been wearing more swimsuits than I have in quite some time, enjoying the fact that the beach and lake are at my fingertips along with the reopened pool in my apartment complex. Naturally, I've been on the hunt for some cute swimsuits to rock this summer!

As much as I love a cute swimsuit, I don't always like how expensive they can be. Seriously, why are water-friendly strips of fabric pricier than most of the dresses in my closet? I do not understand it.

So because I'm all about looking cute this summer but not spending half my paycheck on some skimpy bikinis, I've rounded up some of the cutest on-trend swimsuits that are all under $100 (to the best of my ability, I've tried to make it that full sets are no more than $100, but don't hate me if they go a little over) and grouped them by trend so you can rock the hottest styles this summer.

Pink Bikinis

Look, I've been on the hunt for a cute pink swimsuit for several years now, so I say it's a trend! The piece I'm wearing in the photo above is from Aerie and us a fun neon that makes even pale old me look tan, so would highly recommend!

Groovy Prints

As you know from my summer trends post, I'm all about the psychedelic swirls and hippie-inspired designs right now. They look so cute on swimsuits!

Gingham

You can never go wrong with sweet and preppy gingham prints.

Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny

These are not my favorite style, but flossy string bikinis are all the rage on Instagram right now, so if that's your vibe, here are some cute and affordable options.

Sage

I think this color is so stylish and cool. It's been a big trend all over, but I think it's a neat alternative to a neutral hue for swimwear.

Everything I'm Shopping For This Summer

May 15, 2021

As I write this, I'm two weeks removed from my second Pfizer shot and ready to hit the town. You know, I know, we all know that this past year has been no walk in the park, but for the first time in a while I'm feeling a sense of reserved optimism and my eye for fashion is reflective of that bright spirit.

After a year of wearing T-shirts and leggings for a majority of the time, I'm ready to have some capital-F FUN this summer. I'm talking plenty of color, fun geometric prints, playful shapes, and outfits that are ready to party. I'm also taking into consideration my newfound appreciation for comfort, opting for knit fabrics, breezy midi dresses, and flat shoes that will keep me comfortable as I ease back into "normal" (if that's even a thing anymore) life.

Here are some of the trends and styles I'm keeping an eye out for as I fill up my summer wardrobe:

Disco Stylings

1 | 2 | 3 | 4
Thanks to disco-tinged music from Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, Kasey Musgraves, and so on, it feels like the psycadelic stylings of the '70s are hip once more. Pucci-inspired prints are about to be everywhere, and I'm ready for it.

Colorful Jewelry

1 | 2
This trend is a little controversial (you either love it or hate it) but I for one think it's so fun and an easy way to add color to even a simple jeans & T-shirt ensemble.

Bridgerton-Blue Midi Dresses

1 | 2 | 3
Yeah, I'm still on that Bridgerton style train. I was searching forever for the perfect blue midi-length dress to wear for my Bridgerton-themed picnic (I ended up wearing this dress) but I still might purchase one if I find the perfect in-budget option.

Rectangle Sunglasses

1 | 2
You know I love a trendy sunglass style!

Not-Skinny Jeans

1 | 2 | 3
I love my skinny jeans forever, but I'm not opposed to rocking straight leg, flare, and loose styles either.

Halter Necks

1 | 2 | 3
Halter necks are so cute for summer, and you know what, my collar bone looks great in them!

Silk Scarves

1 | 2 | 3
I will be proudly rocking the Pucci scarf I have sitting in my closet and tying it 1000 different ways thanks to TikTok styling videos.

Let's Picnic

April 16, 2021

Through the past year picnics have been one of the respites from the awfulness of the pandemic, serene moments of sunshine, fresh air, and charcuterie boards. It's no wonder cottagecore styles have become so popular this past year.

I for one have been all about gingham at the moment—and truth be told, I've been on the gingham kick for a few years. But a few months ago I purchased a cute pair of pink gingham pants from Verge Girl after seeing trendy teens on TikTok rocking similar styles, and I love them. So much so that I rounded up a few other gingham pants below:

If you're loving gingham as much as I am, get to shopping and rock the trend for yourself!

Get The Bridgerton Look

January 19, 2021

All images via Netflix

It may have been almost a month since the first season of Bridgerton dropped on Netflix, but I am still spending way too much time thinking about this fun and sultry Regency series. The Dukes are hot, the clothes are eye-catching, and the idea of spending months just flittering around from one ball to the next in search of handsome suitors and juicy gossip sounds more delightful than ever in this era of social isolation.

It should come as no surprise that I enjoyed the fashion of this series for its playful modern take on Regency styles. Between this and EMMA. 2020 was quite the year for Regency fashion, and between the two I have found my interest in interpreting these styles for the modern age growing. Sure, I may not flock to wear a bonnet and opera gloves to promenade around The Grove, but I have noticed my eye focusing on dainty midi dresses in pastel hues, corset-style tops, and delicate pearl and feather details. So if you are like me and loving the Bridgerton style, here are some ways to bring the fashion inspirations into the 21st century:

Look For Empire and Babydoll Midi Dresses

The traditional garb of the Regency debutant was a classically-inspired empire dress, fitted at the torso and ballooning out below. Our modern take on this would probably be the babydoll dress, what with its exaggerated high waistline. If you're looking to dress like a modern-day Daphne Bridgerton, I'd suggest typing in "empire midi dress" or "babydoll midi dress" for modern equivalents. In case you need some inspiration, I've rounded up a few options for you:

Opt For Jacquard, Toile & Lace

These decadent fabrics are staples of the 18th and 19th century and will make any ensemble look glamorous and regal. To keep with the Bridgerton aesthetic, stick with fabrics in light hues and pastels for that candy-colored vibe.

Add A Corset (Or Stay)

Technically stays were the more popular form of upper undergarment during the Regency period, since the billowing dresses didn't require a snatched waist, but corsets are having a big moment right now anyway so you might as well lean into it. I think they look super fun when paired with relax-fit jeans, but throw on a corset over your sweet midi dress for an exciting twist on Regency style.

Ruffle Some Feathers

The ladies aren't the only ones having fun with fashion in Bridgerton. I love the menswear of the Regency era, from the stylish tailcoats to their ruffled collars. Channel their energy with a high-necked ruffle of your own.

Adorn With Embellishments

An outfit isn't complete without plenty of sequins, feathers, pearls and jewels. Rock a feathered headband or pretty pearl necklace to complete your Bridgerton-inspired ensemble.

Pants That Aren't Jeans: What A Concept!

January 17, 2021

Sometimes you walk into Target in hopes of finding Clorox Wipes and body wash and walk out with a cute new pair of pants!

I'm going to be perfectly honest with you: I am not a pants person. I feel most comfortable in a flowing midi dress and often feel like pants are fussy, ill-fitting, and unflattering (or at least, it's hard to find pants that flatter both my waist and my thighs). After almost 27 years of living in this world, I have found that of all the pant-like items in the world, jeans—and stretchy skinny jeans in particular—are the pant style that most suits my lifestyle and my body. I'm also fortunate enough to work in an office where the dress code is pretty casual, meaning I wear jeans all the time.

But my friend, I will admit that after ten months of that WFH lifestyle even a diehard denim advocate such as myself has been asking: is there anything more out there, pants-wise? Potentially a style that doesn't cut into my belly all day long as I sit at the desk in my room?

I've been searching the internet for such a pair of comfortable yet stylish pants, but pants are a tricky thing, size-wise. You must take into account the waist, the inseam, the length, and so many other factors that online size guides don't often detail, meaning I've had my fair share of failed pant fittings when ordering online. The knowledge that a pair of pants may not end up working out—and even worse, may appear unflattering, further deterring me from my mission—made me hesitant to ever hit the "checkout" button even when a pair caught my eye.

But last weekend I found a captivating pair at Target, of all places. There I was, running errands for body wash and other household items, and I found myself staring at a cute pair of plaid, high-waisted, wide leg pants. They were everything I was searching for, and at about $30, the price was right for experimentation. I threw them into my shopping cart and hoped for the best. Once I got home, I tried them on and sighed with relief when I realized that not only did they fit, but they were super cute! And after wearing this ensemble for a whole day of work-from-home business, I can confirm they are comfortable as well.

So there you go: the saga of my brand new pair of pants. Now that I know this style looks good (I've always been self-conscious about how a lot of pants frame my thighs) I think I might seek out a few more pairs like these. And in case you are interested in similar styles, I've rounded up those at the bottom of this post too!

Sweatshirt Dresses For Feeling Comfy & Cute

December 9, 2020

For when you want the comfort of a pair of sweatpants but want to look put together and cool, there's nothing better than a sweatshirt dress. Funny enough, I bought the one I'm wearing in the above photo for my Ariana Grande Halloween costume last year, but it's quickly become one of my go-to pieces for when I want to look cute running weekend errands without putting too much of a fuss into my ensemble.

If you're anything like me, this year has taught you to embrace the joys of comfortable dressing more than ever before, so perhaps you also want to add a sweatshirt dress or two to your closet! Check out a few cute styles that I found!

Tie Dye Looks If You Aren't The DIY Type

April 19, 2020

My exact tie dye sweatshirt is sold out, but I'm sharing some other options with you!

One month into quarantining and tie dye has emerged as the official uniform of the stylish social distancer. It makes perfect sense: tie dye was already having a moment before coronavirus, and now people are looking for ways to pass the time and create new things, so tie dye presents itself as a great DIY solution.

Dozens of tie dyeing videos on TikTok and Instagram have tempted me to try my hand at creating a psychedelic sweatsuit of my own, but the mundane logisitical issues (mainly, where does one acquire tie dye materials, and what if I mess up or don't like the end result?) have kept me from ordering supplies on Amazon. There is, alas, a simpler solution: buy an affordable and pre-dyed item on the internet!

Seriously, there is tie dye everywhere at the moment, and in a vast array of cute styles, colors, and designs to fit your fancy. All these pieces that I found are under $100 (and a lot are event under $50) so you can stock up on some cool home-friendly items that aren't too pricey.

Shorts You Can Wear To Work

July 15, 2019

It's hot out there. I get it. We all get it.

And some days, you just aren't feeling the fussiness of a dress or skirt.

But it's hot. So pants are pretty much out of the question. What ever is a girl to do!?

I've always been a bit hesitant of shorts; I love my denim cut-offs for off-duty days, but as a tall girl with long legs and an even longer torso, finding shorts that fit all of me and don't leave my butt half hanging out is next to impossible, especially these days where I feel like your only options are Daisy Dukes or Bermuda shorts. Hello? Where is the middle ground!?

But fear not, my friends, because it appears we have finally reached a happy medium between beach day booty shorts and knee length khaki shorts that make me look like a midwestern mom. Hooray!

I found these shorts on Sunday while quickly bopping into H&M. I was immediately drawn to the color, and after initially thinking the pair was actually a skirt, I decided to try them on anyway and see if I liked them. I wanted to hate them, but I just couldn't. Here are shorts that look like a fun skirt, cover all the parts they need to cover, and are comfortable too! It's nothing short of a shopping miracle.

The best part about these shorts is that I finally found a pair that I liked, that was flattering, and that I could still wear to work. Now, I do work in a decently laid-back office when it comes to dress code, so these may not pass the test at, say, a corporate law firm, but if you can get away with rocking shorts to the office every so often, I say go for it!

Here are a few styles that you should check out if you're looking for work-appropriate shorts:

Paper Bag Shorts

A high-waisted style is always chic, and the folded waistline lends itself to work-friendly shapes.

Bermuda Shorts

Think of these as the anti-bike short.

Wide-Leg Shorts

Wide-leg shorts, like the pair I found at H&M, allow you to rock slightly shorter styles, especially if they're flowy and lightweight!

Picture Pearl-Fect

March 28, 2019

As much as I can detest the word "influencer" sometimes, I must admit, it is an apt word to describe the positively chic on social media. After all, I find myself falling victim to their subtle marketing ploys all the time. While I am rather skeptical of sponsored content these days (I work on dozens of these digital partnerships for my job, after all) I can still easily be encouraged by a fashionable Instagram star to test out a new trend.

Exhibit A: the pearl hair clip.

I can't remember the first time I saw one of these embellished hair accessories on my Instagram feed, nor can I tell you who finally convinced me to order a set of clips for myself, but I can say that seemingly overnight my feed became flooded with pearl accessories.

Perhaps it was the result of a wildly successful influencer seeding program, but my goodness, they were everywhere! Now I can hardly make it through 10 posts without seeing one of these bad boys on my phone screen.

Eventually I gave in and ordered a set of 3 pearl hair clips on Amazon, because who wants to shell out $30+ when we know this trend will fizzle out by the time summer is over?

And I will say, even though it might be "basic" of me to succumb to an ubiquitous Instagram trend, I truly do love these little hair clips. They've begun to inspire me to branch out into the world of hair accessories, and I get compliments on them every time I wear them!

So if you are like me and have found yourself wondering if you should try this accessories trend out, I say go for it! There are plenty of affordable options out there that will let you rock this trend without buyer's remorse. Here are a few of my favorites:

Let Me Be Completely Transparent

January 26, 2019

I make no claims about being a neat and tidy person. As much as I would love to be a minimalist Marie Kondo worshipper with clear countertops and an organized closet, I just don't have the time and energy to be about that life. I'm not messy, but I'm a Taurus so I have a lot of things and I like it that way.

My purses are an extension of this way of living—never overflowing with random trinkets, but filled with their share of mile-long Rite Aid receipts and old lipsticks that I haven't work in ages. And yes, throwing these items out would take minimal effort, but I usually just don't care enough to worry about it.

But for the right accessory, these viewpoints can change. Enter: the Staud Shirley Tote, an adorable purse came in such a gorgeous shade of pink that I just had to add it to my holiday wish list.

The transparent outer shape was a bit intimidating at first (am I really the type of person who can handle this responsibility?) but I realized it was the perfect gateway into the world of clear purses, since it features a removable pink pouch for me to hide all my more sensitive belongings (in other words, I don't care how cool the purse is, I'm just not the kind of person who can have tampons on display in my clear purse—even if said tampons have cute packaging).

The clear purse trend has almost become a challenge in this regard; are you brave enough to show off the contents of your bag to the world? Can you even edit your belongings enough to look like a simple, curatorial individual instead of a hoarder?

The beauty of a purse is the ability to keep objects, no matter how mundane or shocking, close to us and known only to us. The clear purse removes that air of mystery, and that can be very frightening.

On the other hand, the clear purse allows for all the contents within your purse to become accessories themselves. Keys, sunglasses, lipstick tubes, wallets, and more are fully on display now, instead of simply when they are utilized. I for one love this benefit, because so often I feel the gorgeous packaging of my go-to Origins lipstick, for example, goes unseen by everyone but me; now, all passersby can witness the small details of my personal style.

If you're completely intimidated by this trend, I understand, but I encourage you to try it out! And even if your purse doesn't come with an opaque pouch like mine does, you can always toss in a makeup pouch to obscure any items you don't want the general public to see. But test out this trend and let me know what you think!

Mixed Florals

January 16, 2019

All photos by Brandon Colbert

I've always been a sucker for floral prints and am constantly looking for designs that turn floral print on its head. One trend I've been noticing lately is fabrics that mix different size floral prints, or different prints altogether in patchwork designs.

Take this dress that I wore over the weekend for example: the floral design shifts from miniature to oversize throughout the fabric, which creates intrigue and movement.

From Gucci to Ulla Johnson, so many designers are getting into this trend. I dare you to test out this style come spring.

Check out how I wore this trend below and keep scrolling to shop some mixed-floral prints!

Put A Bow On It!

January 8, 2019

Anything is better when it is tied up in a bow. It's a simple truth. A gift adorned in wrapping paper? Top with a bow! Shoe laces? Tie them in a bow and you remove a tripping hazard! A ribbon at the end of your braid? A bow is exactly what's needed!

It stands to reason, then, that shirts too would benefit from a little bow action. It's crazy how a long piece of fabric or ribbon can transform the whole style of a clothing item when looped into a bow, but it's so true. A plain white blouse is just that until you add a bow at the neck!

Because I love all things girly and feminine, bows are a staple styling trick of mine. It shouldn't come as much as a surprise for you to learn that this pink blouse I'm wearing was the must-have piece (in my mind, anyway) from Atlantic Pacific's collaboration with Nordstrom. I HAD to have it!

But anyway, one of the big trends I'm noticing for fall is a lot of western and prairie inspired pieces. Maybe it's just the Westworld fan in me, but I am all about this look. Expect me to rock plenty of calico prints, suede, and maybe even a pair of cowboy boots this autumn.

Trending | Wide Belts

April 30, 2018

Back in middle school, I was all about the wide belt. A patent leather belt, at least 3 inches wide, was the perfect accessory to give my outfit the chicness of a Hannah Montana extra and accentuate my nonexistent, middle schooler curves. And don't even get me started on my adoration for wide belts post-The Devil Wears Prada. Anne Hathaway rocked the you-know-what out of those belted looks, and for such a long time I was sold that that was the epitome of fashionable accessorizing.
