Blue is the Warmest Color

November 18, 2014

Honor | Tomas Maier | Edun | Fendi | Jonathan Saunders | Coach
Baby blue was all over the Spring 2015 runways. And now that we're entering into the last month of 2014, it's time to start looking towards the year ahead. From Fendi to Altuzarra, light, pastel shades of blue dominated collections, on everything from oversized coats to feathery party dresses.

This color has staying power, so invest now with a winter coat or wait for spring with a blue midi skirt. Baby blue looks amazing with black, camel, and cream colors, or stay monochromatic as with the Edun and Jonathan Saunders looks.

No matter what, you are going to look fabulous!

Shear Genius

October 13, 2014

The arrival of cooler weather often leads people to find out how to best stay comfy and cozy with their clothing choices. The lazy individual will reach for a sweatshirt and some boots and call it a day, but we fashionistas know better. There is, after all, a way to stay comfy and cute.

And so the fashion gods decided shearling would be the trendy texture of the season. Thank goodness! Ugg boots are almost acceptable again (keyword: almost) and there are plenty of options if you are looking to add some shearling to your look.

Are you ready to give shearling a try, or is this a trend that you'll watch from afar?

The Empire Strikes Back

March 20, 2014

As I've previously commented upon, the Mulleavy sisters (the designing duo behind Rodarte) have always been inspired by film, and this season it seems that the force was totally with them. They had dresses emblazoned with the Death Star, alien planets from a galaxy far far away, and some of the original trilogy's main characters. I'm pretty sure I said something along the lines of "These are the best outfits to wear to ComicCon if you are a nerd but also quite fashionable and not into cosplaying" ... or something like that.

Rodarte, however, rarely establishes a trend. The brand often feels like a fairytale, existing in its own world and influencing itself but not really other fashion houses. I loved the influence of Star Wars but I didn't feel like it would be an inspiration anywhere else.

And yet the Rodarte show stuck with me. I kept spying Star Wars influences everywhere I went. Dark starry prints on a dress at Fendi. Futuristic utilitarian suits at Andrew Gn and Maxime Simoens conjured up images of more fashionable storm troopers. Reed Krakoff had one look that perfectly resembled a genderbent version of Han Solo.

When Preen featured not one but two looks with Darth Vader's iconic helmet screened onto the fabric, I knew this wasn't a coincidence. It seemed Rodarte was indeed on to something when they dedicated their fall presentation to Luke Skywalker & Co.

Maybe the fashion world is just as excited as the rest of us are for the new era of Star Wars movies that is coming to us soon, thanks to Disney and J.J. Abrams. Maybe fashion designers are more nerdy than their cool all-black ensembles make them out to be.

Whatever the case may be, I am totally digging the Star Wars influence of the fall 2014 runways. Are you?

Best in Show: Milan Fashion Week Fall 2014

Marni

At Marni the models were birds of a feather - or fur? Either way there were many references to the natural world and the coats of all sorts of creatures. Furs are standard fall collection fare, but Consuelo Castiglioni applied it in strange asymmetrical patches and in unnatural prints and colors.

The color scheme was rather utilitarian, but it's not a Marni show without some unexpected pops of color strewn throughout. There would be a parade of army green outfits punctuated by a hot pink monochrome look just to make sure you are always on your toes.

The final looks of the show were absolutely stunning in terms of innovation and construction. They appear to be natural and idyllic while at the same time futuristic and modern - the juxtaposition of the natural and the constructed world seemed to be a recurring theme throughout the collection.

Altogether this was one of the most inspiring and inventive Marni shows that I have seen. There is the usual attention to construction and shape combined with the offbeat quirkiness, but it is much more sophisticated and creative than ever before.

I can't imagine celebrities having any luck on the red carpet with these funky outfits, but I don't think that's the point of Castiglioni's latest collection. These are beautiful and challenging clothes, and I love it.

Fendi

Another designer to use copious amounts of fur was Karl Lagerfeld for his latest collection for Fendi. Of course, Fendi was founded as a fur house, so this makes sense. Compared to the punchy primary colors of the spring collection, Fendi Fall 2014 may seem a bit drab. I'm not usually one for such earthy tones, but I really enjoy how Lagerfeld has utilized them here.

There's a kind of retro-futuristic vibe going on here, like how people from the 50s thought the future would look. In what seems to be one of fall's prevailing themes, I can almost imagine Princess Leia wearing one of these looks while touring the galaxy far far away. But then there are go go boots and ladylike dresses and the most amazing fur baseball jacket ever which are not so much Star Wars and really more of a cool, retro-modern look.

In the end these clothes are sleek and lovely. Fashion editors are going to eat these looks up, and bloggers will not be able to get enough of that fur baseball jacket. Seriously, that is magical.

Major Shade

September 25, 2013

I'm a big-time fan of sunglasses. Not only do they protect my dainty light gray eyes from being permanently damaged by the sun (and keep me from squinting, which will mean less wrinkles when I'm older!) but they also instantly make people look ten times as fierce. For this reason I've got quite a few pairs of shades, from Tory Burch aviators and Ray-Ban Wayfarers to $10 cat eyes and free USC sunglasses from football games!

For spring of next year, I'm already picking up a major emphasis on eyewear. Specifically, designers are doing their own interpretations of very retro styles, like cat eyes and smaller frames.

Prabal Gurung, Rochas, and Burberry are some of the many brands taking on retro shades for spring. Combined with a fifties-style getup and a fierce pout, this is an absolutely killer fashion statement. Count me in!
