Red Carpet: the SAG Awards

January 27, 2013

Over the past few weeks I have realized why I am so grateful to attend a fabulous university in the heart of Los Angeles. As you may know, awards season is upon us, and that means exciting Hollywood events all day, everyday for over a month. It helps to go to a school that is so invested in film and that offers free screenings of awesome movies (Silver Linings Playbook with a Q&A afterwards with the director, editor, and actors Chris Tucker and Julia Stiles) and other fabulous events.

Just today were the Screen Actors' Guild Awards, conveniently located at the Shrine Auditorium, a mere block away from the north end of campus. Also conveniently, I had to pick up some nail polish and makeup for Spring Rush purposes (important stuff, you know; makeup for a cause) at CVS, which just so happens to be on the same block as the Shrine. Unfortunately the security guards weren't too keen on letting me and my pink bike just cruise on by to try to get a glimpse of some of the loves of my life, like Eddie Redmayne and Damien Lewis -I don't know if I was dressed up enough for the occasion, even though I was wearing an adorable black pants and jacket/hot pink J. Crew sweater combo- but just the sight of a line of limos and SUVs with tinted windows made me so excited. Maybe I didn't get to see Claire Danes or Jessica Chastain in their phenomenal gowns, but perhaps they caught a glimpse of me as I biked back to campus and made a mental note to get a hot pink sweater like that one girl on her cute pink bike. Wishful thinking?

Star-stalking attempts thwarted, I returned to my dorm room only to see the celebrities arrive on the red carpet, giddy with the knowledge that they were still in such proximity to campus. Though I lacked the opportunity to catch the starlets in action, I was personally delighted to see the looks of the night. The SAG Awards are a sophisticated affair -more dignified and less gimmicky than the party-like Golden Globes without the pretentiousness of the Oscars- and the dresses were for the most part divine.

Here's a look at some of the most memorable stars and starlets of the night:

Amanda Seyfried in Zac Posen
Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Haute Couture
Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen
Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior
Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta
Rose Byrne in Valentino
Kiernan Shipka
Naomi Watts in Marchesa

Midnight blues and blacks were the most popular colors on the red carpet (See: Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, etc.) but there was plenty of color and excitement to combat the somewhat dreary and incredibly unusual rainy LA weather. Jessica Chastain dispelled the myth that redheads shouldn't wear red by wowing in Alexander McQueen and Freida Pinto donned a stunning neon pink Roland Mouret gown alongside beau Dev Patel. The misses were few and far between, and that's the way the red carpet should be.

Favorite looks of the night for me, you may be asking? I must say that Jennifer Lawrence stunned with her Dior gown and simple side-swept hair, and Naomi Watts was old-Hollywood glamour (as usual). Who were your best dressed celebrities at the SAG Awards?

  1. Great post! I especially enjoyed the mental image of the young fashionista on her bicycle possibly inspiring one or more of the stars!
    Any why not!

I'd have to say Jennifer Lawrence is certainly 2013's "it girl."
