5 Trend Takeaways from the Fall 2017 Shows

Now that the shows are over, let's talk big picture

It's never too early to start thinking about next fall's most popular styles. Now that the Fall 2017 shows are over (check out all my favorite collections here), I've been looking back on my favorite collections and trying to pick out the biggest trends and recurring themes.

Check out the 5 trends that I think will be huge come autumn:

1. Marigold

Altuzarra | Erdem | Oscar de la Renta | Calvin Klein | Jason Wu
On the spring runways, bright, cheery yellows were everywhere. For fall, yellow was still a popular color, but it was a rich golden tone that dominated catwalks, particularly in velvet fabrics.

2. Gothic Lolita

ADEAM | Giambattista Valli | Philosophy | Ryan Lo | Valentino
Harajuku fashion has always fascinated fashion designers. Last season Marc Jacobs was captivated by it, and this season ADEAM, Ryan Lo, and Valentino all have caught the harajuku bug. But they weren't just replicating the bubblegum lolita outfits of Japanese street style; they imbued the style with a gothic edge. The result? Victorian-inspired clothes with a hint of sweetness as well as a touch of darkness.

3. Purple + Blue

Derek Lam | Chanel | Christopher Kane
Ready for the season's most daring color combination? Purple and blue were paired together quite a few times on the fall runways. To do it right, I suggest keeping the colors varied; lavender and navy, or sky blue and a deep royal purple, for example. Otherwise people will just be squinting at your outfit, wondering if they're crazy or if you really are wearing two different colors.

4. Slouchy Boots

Ulla Johnson | Osman | Saint Laurent | Isabel Marant | Marc Jacobs
Boots are a fall fashion no-brainer, but the overwhelming favorite style for Fall 2017 is without a doubt the slouchy boot. Usually knee or thigh high, the slouchy boot works best when paired with tights, leggings, or a flowy dress that leaves a little bit of room for skin. Basically, if the boot is slouchy, pretty much everything else should be fitted.

5. Power Suiting

Prabal Gurung | Céline | Oscar de la Renta | Isabel Marant | Cushnie et Ochs
With the rise of Pantsuit Nation, it was inevitable that the pantsuit was going to be a big trend on fall runways. Designers took the pantsuit in many different directions; does one keep it stiff and masculine, or does one give it a feminine reinterpretation? In other words, how should a powerful woman dress? Lucky for us, the answer is up to the buyer, as in, you—the woman—get to decide how a woman should dress!

What trend do you think will be big this fall?

  1. I saw so much yellow on the runway. Usually I'm not a fan of yellow but after seeing all of it, I think I might have to try wearing it!
