Plaid (or tartan, for purists) is an autumnal staple that made an even bigger splash on the runways, thanks to both 90s grunge-inspired shows like Saint Laurent Paris and more classic, simple presentations like Celine (Pictured above).
The linear print has infiltrated all corners of the fashion world and I couldn't be happier!
Add just a touch of plaid with a printed bag or barettes adorning your hair.
Or go mad and pair different patterned coordinates together! The possibilities are endless.
Personally, I have my eye on that Madewell vest, but I don't know I could justify such a cold weather piece when it is currently pushing 90 degrees here in sunny (always so sunny) Los Angeles.*
Until that day comes where I need winter wear, I'll probably settle for a fabulous pair of plaid shoes...and I do have a super cute American Apparel schoolgirl plaid skirt left over from my Blair and Serena Big-Little costume (thank goodness for sororities and their love of costumes!).
So I guess I have some criss-crossed options to try out! How about you guys? Are you mad about plaid like I am?
*I love LA to pieces, but I wouldn't mind if it got just a little cold for a little bit, you know? A girl can dream, right?

Pink pastel coats seem to be all the rage right now. Last week when passing by Topshop at the Grove (aka one of the best shopping destinations on the planet) all the mannequins were wearing pastel pink coats and dresses - paired with festive holiday sparkles, of course.
The same styles were seen on the Fall 2013 runways at shows like Carven, Prada, and Jonathan Saunders.
So how does one wear a pastel pink coat without looking like a total cupcake? Take some cues from these guys!

When wearing an oversize coat that is rosy-colored as a fluffy piece of cotton candy, it is best to balance the piece out with simple, sleek separates in neutral colors (like black and white, as the street style stars and bloggers have so wonderfully demonstrated). Menswear inspired accessories like brogues or straightforward boxy bags also counteract the "girly" color if you are worried about this look being too girly.

There is nothing more badass than a cool girl in cool leather, and right now I am kind of obsessing over it.
Skirts, jackets, dresses, shirts, shoes...anything can be leather and anything that is made with leather immediately ups your cool points by like, 1000%. (Or "vegan" leather, you know, if you are a better moral person than I am)
The great thing is that while a leather motorcycle jacket is so totally cool and badass, there are more ways to rock leather in a more subtle fashion, so if you want to wear some leather but don't have enough street cred to look like you just joined a biker gang, fear not! There are plenty of options for you!
Or, if you are looking for traditional rock-n-roll style leather stuff, there's plenty for you as well!

There's that one quote that everyone always uses:
"Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends."
And as overused as that quote can be, it is so absolutely true. Dress-up time when we are little is when we first learn to experiment with fashion, and that fascination with clothing and style never disappears. It's fun to put on Mom's pearls and high heels and pretend we are grown up, and now that we are well on our way to becoming real grown-ups it's fun to go back to those days and dress like we did when we were fantasizing about the future, dressing up like the proper ladies we imagined we would become.

Of course, no one is expected to always be proper; we are still growing up, still making mistakes, and still learning, but sometimes it is fun to channel that inner Ladies Who Lunches who has had like three husbands, minor plastic surgery, and a group of amazing friends that will drop everything for a Sunday brunch gab-fest - yeah, someday we'll all be that cool, but until then, we can just dress like them.
Nothing is so classically sexy as the ferociously-feline leopard print. The spotted print made a big appearance on fall runways, so it's a good time to grab your leopard dresses and accessories and get catty (in a good way)!
The great thing about leopard print is that it lends itself to a variety of options of clothing and accessory pieces. If you want to just add a pop of puurfection, printed shoes or a bag will instantly glam up an otherwise plain outfit. Or opt for an all-over print and be the star of the party! It's totally up to you.

Who said sleepwear is just for the sleeping? Certainly we do not hold it as a steadfast rule of style (especially since so many seem to be perfectly content wearing sweatpants and other loungewear items long into the waking hours).
For those of you who still prefer matching silk pajama sets and nightgowns than T-shirts and sweatpants, you too don't have to retire your nighttime getup when the sun comes up.
Marc Jacobs especially has advocated for comfortable daywear that emulates sleepwear but looks just as killer as a leather jacket.
So how does one translate sleepwear into daywear? It's quite simple and you are gonna love it.
For daytime, pair a smart piped button-down and elegant smoking slippers (the stylish lady's alternative to Ugg slippers and boots) with tailored denim shorts or skinny slacks.
For nighttime, pull a Courtney Love or Carrie Bradshaw-in-a-hurry and hang a heavy coat over a tissue-thin lace-trimmed silk nightgown. Top off with dainty floral-print pumps, a bright lip, and carefully tousled beadhead for maximum impact.
The key to the sleepwear-for-daytime look is balancing proportions and tailoring. Because sleepwear is often looser and more relaxed in terms of fitting, you want to pair your sleep-inspired items with tailored, fitted pieces that will balance proportions well.

Back in the days of nap time and recess, backpacks were a big deal. Usually I purchased one with a Disney princess or Barbie on it - and bonus points if I could find a matching lunchbox. Sometime during middle school I decided to discard my two-shoulder book bag for a cooler, more sophisticated tote bag. Back in my day, there were only two options for backpacks: overly-childish cartoon-themed bags or painstakingly-plain Jansport sacs.
If I had been offered the cool vintage-inspired and luxe leather backpacks as an adolescent, I don't think I would have ever ditched them. Backpacks are suddenly cool again, and thank goodness, because they are great for your shoulders!
Steve Madden, Tory Burch, and Christopher Kane have all hopped on the backpack trend, ensuring that there is a bag for every style of girl.
Of course, I just found a great black leather tote bag by Kelsi Dagger at Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale, so I'll be sticking to my purses for a little longer, but I do love the resurgence of backpacks lately.
It's a known fact that I am forever obsessed with Kate Spade. Classic clothes with quirky twists are totally my thing, so Kate Spade and their cutesy creations always have me swooning. The brand's Fall 2013 collection, featuring the adorable cyclops creations from Darcel artist Craig Redman, is no exception.
The collection is based on the brand's hometown, New York City, with taxis, hot dog stands, and downtown cool serve as the main motifs throughout the collaboration.

Ombre is still going strong as a fashion trend, and this fall will see the dip-dyed style get a little cooler.
Jonathan Saunders and Proenza Schouler featured pieces in their Fall 2013 presentations that transformed from the lightest of blues to the darkest of noirs (and sometimes back again).
Whoever said that black and blue didn't go together clearly hasn't been paying attention to runway shows as of late, because the two colors together couldn't look better.
Go black & blue from head-to-two with a lovely dyed dress, or use the trend as an accent with a fun ombre manicure! Go as big or little as you want, but definitely check out this trend.

Loving Miu Miu's fall 2013 ad campaign. Captures the retro-glam, sultry side of the collection as well as the adventurous practicality of the clothes. Who says you can't go exploring in a mermaid dress, neck scarf, and five-inch mary janes?

Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen led the royal movement with their gilded runway shows, but quite a few designers showcased medieval-influenced designs and accessories. Lanvin took a more modern approach, but their full skirts and pretty tiaras screamed Disney princess all grown up.

The key to this look: gold, brocade, and wonderfully tailored bodices. Think details, jewelry, and rich dyes. It's all about looking regal and, well, royal.
Because my invitation to Marc Jacob's Fall 2013 Presentation got lost in the mail (hahah get it that was funny) I settled for pulling up style.com's live stream of the show, which frankly was probably better than actually being there because, um, Anna Wintour can't eat pita chips and paint her nails in the front row like I can. But seriously, there was no better way to spend this Valentine's Day afternoon than watching my one true love -fashion, duh. But let's get to the show.

So while waiting for the show to start, my initial thoughts were as follows: circles. Circle of Life. Lion King. I'm sorry, you can't show a huge orange-yellow sun ever since that movie without me thinking "Nants ingonyama bagithi baba" and I'm pretty sure everyone else was thinking it too.
But as the crowd quieted and the music started up (and Elton John was nowhere to be heard) I realized -with some disappointment, as a Lion King-inspired collection by Marc would be a sight to see- that this was not a collection based in the African Savanna. Instead it was a rather punk rock feel, as it often is with Marc, with the models all sporting spiky black pixie cuts and thick eyeliner.
However, it didn't seem like Marc's "Girl" was a wild punk rocker out on the town. Rather, it was as if a former groupie had decided to change her ways, start a new life and become a secretary or something tame and calm, only to revert back to her ways one night. Or the jaded girl finally waking up and recognizing that something needed to change in her life. You see, the models wavered between decently-modest pencil skirts and oversized button-down shirts and sweaters covering their otherwise bare bodies. Others still walked in oversize coats that seemed modest enough, until you noticed that they were clutching their bags close to their bodies and the second they removed their hands the coat would come completely undone.

That was the moment in which it became clear to me:
walk of shame.
the morning after.
waking up.
This was the show. This was why there was a giant sun presiding over the runway. It's the girl waking up after a night of possibly regrettable decisions, feeling like maybe she had made some bad choices, but accepting her actions and owning them.
It was a strong and empowering statement, the woman who made sometimes bad choices but who lived and who really did own her actions. It's the Marc Jacobs Girl, and she's someone I wouldn't mind being.

I just want to be as cool as the Elizabeth and James kids are. I want the oversized coats paired with impossibly skinny trousers and the ironic penny loafers and the quilted leather bombers. I want to be this cool.

Frankly I just love the hair and makeup of the Marc by Marc Jacobs girls. The clothes were pretty awesome too. Also, counting down the days until the circular purses hit the shelves. Those things are so great!

Milly was going for the cool urban girl vibe, but with so much sparkle that even a dorky prepster like me can fawn over. Also, I'm still not sick of the scuba/neoprene fad that has taken contemporary design by storm.

Jason Wu has managed to keep us begging for more season after season, and FALL 2013 was no exception. The "Wu Girl" has an eye for the extravagant and glamorous, but there are pieces that appeal to every sort of style. My favorite pieces were the lace-printed trousers and the white feather dress.

Rebecca Minkoff gave us many options for fall coats, which I'm sure appealed to those watching the show, as New York experienced some freezing temperatures on Friday. Minkoff has literally given us a coat for every occasion -going out, rain coats, Saturday shopping- you name the event, and Minkoff has given you a coat to go with it!

Fashion Week in New York kicked off yesterday with shows and presentations by Creatures of the Wind, Erin Fetherston, BCBG, and more. The standouts from day one, in my opinion, were Creatures of the Wind, Tanya Taylor, and Timo Weiland.
