The 2017 Oscars Red Carpet

February 27, 2017

Mahershala Ali, Emma Stone, and Viola Davis pose with their Oscars (I'm not missing anyone from this photo, am I...?)

It's Hollywood's biggest night!

What was shaping up to be a pretty run-of-the-mill Oscars ceremony became so much more in the final moments, when one of the La La Land producers (on stage, accepting the award for Best Picture) paused and said, "JK, this award is supposed to go to Moonlight!" (I'm paraphrasing but you get it). At first I wondered if this was a consolation acknowledgement, in the vein of Adele's nod to Beyonce at the Grammys, but no, the La La Land guy held up the winning envelope to the camera and, lo and behold, it read Moonlight.

Wild.
But seriously, congrats, Moonlight!!

While the 89th Academy Awards ended with a twist, the red carpet was relatively tame and perfectly delightful. Although I wished more celebrities had embraced big ball gowns (there were just way too many on the couture runways to ignore) I enjoyed most of the red carpet looks.

The biggest trends of the evening were light colors, from ivory whites to champagne gold, and even some silver here and there. Other dresses were for the most part red or black. In fact, there really were no crazy colors on the red carpet, save for Leslie Mann's gorgeous Zac Posen dress, perhaps. Oh well!

I'm quite excited that some of my red carpet predictions were really close! I correctly predicted the designer and style of Octavia Spencer's Marchesa gown, and the dresses I picked for Emma Stone and Isabelle Huppert were worn, just by different actresses (Sofia Boutella and Meryl Streep, respectively). Maybe I have a calling as a celebrity stylist!

Anyway, check out some of my favorite red carpet looks below:

Color Trends

Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad | Karlie Kloss in Stella McCartney | Olivia Culpo in Marchesa | Hailee Steinfeld in Ralph & Russo
Dakota Johnson in Gucci | Emma Stone in Givenchy Couture | Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé | Jessica Biel in Kaufman Franco

The Accessory of the Evening

Ruth Negga sporting an ACLU ribbon
You may have noticed quite a few celebrities accessorizing their red carpet looks with blue ribbons. That was no coincidence! Everyone from Ruth Negga to Lin Manuel Miranda sported one of these ribbons to support the ACLU (aka the American Civil Liberties Union). The ACLU has been working in overdrive these past few weeks, protecting the civil liberties of immigrants and citizens alike, so it was nice to see so many celebrities stand in solidarity with this important organization.

Supporting Actress Nominees

Octavia Spencer in Marchesa | Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton | Viola Davis in Armani Privé | Naomie Harris in Calvin Klein | Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé
I loved all these outfits, honestly. I was initially on the fence about Naomie Harris' Calvin Klein dress, as it felt informal at first, but the material is straight-up couture status, and she looks flawless. Nicole Kidman also looked lovely, and while you would think the nude dress would wash her out, her bold red lip balanced the look and kept it glam and chic.

But of course, Best Supporting Actress winner Viola Davis was a stand-out in bright red Armani Privé. I love the cut and the draping on the shoulders, and she just looks radiant.

Lead Actress Nominees

Emma Stone in Givenchy Couture | Ruth Negga in Valentino Couture | Isabelle Huppert in Armani Privé
Another group of incredible looks! Ruth Negga was the first red carpet look I saw, and I loved her red, Victorian-style Valentino dress. She's been a fashion wildcard all season, and I think this was a great look for her.

Isabelle Huppert looked elegant in an embellished Armani Privé gown, and Meryl Streep wore the Elie Saab outfit I had picked for her! (See it here; Meryl is too cool for the Oscars red carpet step-and-repeat, I guess. Also, Natalie Portman did not attend the ceremony)

But Emma Stone was a winner through and through, in my absolute favorite look of the evening. She harkened back to the early days of Hollywood in a golden flapper gown, and she looked the part of Oscar winner in dazzling gold.

The Best Dressed Cast

Pharrell Williams in Chanel | Janelle Monae in Elie Saab Couture | Taraji P. Henson in Alberta Ferretti | Kirsten Dunst in Dior Couture | Mahershala Ali in Ermenegildo Zegna
Let's give a quick shoutout to the Hidden Figures cast because they crushed it! When Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, and Taraji P. Henson walked out on stage together, I died, it was too much fabulousness. And yes, I realize Pharrell technically wasn't in the movie but he did the soundtrack and wore Chanel, so he gets to be included.

My Picks: Best Dressed

Emma Stone in Givenchy | Janelle Monae in Elie Saab
It's a tie between Emma Stone in Givenchy Couture and Janelle Monae in Elie Saab Couture. I love Emma's vintage-inspired golden gown, but I'm also a fan of a dramatic moment and a big dress, and Janelle brought it with an intricately-detailed Elie Saab ball gown.

Which look was your favorite on the Oscars red carpet?
