Proenza Schouler Fall 2016

Define yourself

Whenever I watch period dramas and start aweing over the costumes, I find myself really wanting to own a corset. In my rococo-era fantasies, they're glamorous and give me the perfect shape to wear gorgeous robes à la française. In reality, corsets are the reason why you hear about women fainting so much in Jane Austen novels and likely caused all sorts of health problems. Yikes.

So yeah, corsets as waist-training tools should probably never return (I'm looking at you, Kardashian-Jenner sisters and your love of waist-training) but they are cool stylistically, so I'm all for the current trend of corseting details in more casual pieces, like T-shirts and knitwear.

We Wore What | Hailey Baldwin | Kylie Jenner | Gigi Hadid | Kim Kardashian
Speaking of Kardashians, Kim has rocked a corset belt over a T-shirt dress once or twice lately, and I am all about it. The easiest way to invest in this trend is to buy a lace-up corset belt and throw it over your outfit, nicely defining your waist and adding plenty of intrigue to an otherwise simple look. If you want a one-and-done look, Forever 21 and ASOS have quite a few knit dresses with corset details that are both trendy and affordable! Yay! You don't need a Balmain budget to rock this trend, just a Balmain attitude.

For a cool way to style, I would keep the rest of the outfit casual and decidedly un-sexy, since corsets tend to sex up an outfit plenty. Pair your corset dress with an oversize hoodie and slide sandals or sneakers to keep the look balanced and cool.
