74th Golden Globes Red Carpet Review

January 9, 2017

Golden Globe winners Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone

A golden night in La La Land

La La Land dazzled. The Night Manager surprised. Moonlight prevailed. The 74th Golden Globes were full of both expected wins and true surprises, making for an exciting night where anything could happen. As anticipated, La La Land won over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association the same way it did audiences, earning a record 7 wins at the Globes last night.

In the TV category, things were a little more up-in-the-air, as Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston both won for their roles in The Night Manager over Courtney B. Vance and Sterling K. Brown for their work in The People v. OJ: American Crime Story. (TBH, Sterling K. Brown is one of the best actors around right now. His role on This Is Us is what makes me watch that emotionally manipulative show week after week!) And in the highly competitive Best Actress-TV Comedy category, where there were six nominees instead of the usual five, Black-ish's Tracee Ellis Ross won over predicted winner Issa Rae. Honestly, that category was an impossible choice, as all of the nominees are phenomenal on their respective television shows.

On the red carpet, too, it seemed that there were many winners but no real losers. There were some looks that dazzled, but I never saw a dress or hairstyle I truly hated, and I love when I have to struggle to pick a best dressed celebrity!

Sunday's ceremony was bookended by two days of rain in LA, so I loved seeing bright colors aplenty. Yellow and pink were the two big color trends of the night:
Reese Witherspoon in Atelier Versace | Natalie Portman in Prada | Viola Davis in Michael Kors | Maisie Williams in Ong Oaj Pairam | Emily Ratajkowski in Reem Acra
Felicity Jones in Gucci | Angela Bassett in Christian Siriano | Lola Kirke in Andrew Gn | Zoe Saldana in Gucci | Claire Foy in Erdem
On the more traditional side of things, glitzy silver and classic black were also in abundance on the red carpet:

Sarah Paulson in Marc Jacobs | Emma Stone in Valentino | Tracee Ellis Ross in Zuhair Murad Couture | Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen | Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton
Amy Adams in Tom Ford | Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan | Kristen Bell in Jenny Packham | Blake Lively in Atelier Versace
And Evan Rachel Wood made a powerful statement in a classic pantsuit, reminding girls that they can wear whatever they want, even on the red carpet. Kathryn Hahn and Octavia Spencer also followed suit (haha, get it, suit!)
Kathryn Hahn in Brandon Maxwell | Octavia Spencer in Laura Basci | Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra
There were so many incredible looks from the evening, from Viola Davis' stunning yellow gown to Amy Adam's glamorous Tom Ford look, but I'm going to pick...
Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad Couture
...Lily Collins as best dressed of the evening! I just love everything about this look, from the fairytale princess dress to the lovely updo to the vampy makeup to keep the gown from appearing too sweet. I think this was totally elegant, and I can never resist a good princess gown!

Who was your pick for best dressed at the Golden Globes?

  2. Loved this little recap! I feel like the style at the Globes is a little bolder and more experimental - which makes for a more fun Red Carpet, IMO : )

    1. Thank you, Amy! I totally agree that the GG style is a little more fun and risk-taking. Some celebs will opt for shorter dresses or even suits, which I can't imagine happening at the Oscars, although Bjork did wear that swan dress so...

  3. Great pick, Lindsey! Lily Collins really did look stunning in that princess gown. But as for my top pick, I would have to choose Emma Stone in that whimsical Valentino gown. She's just so adorable with that cascading stars and at the same time sizzling with that plunging neckline. And with her hair and the way she was made up, just perfect! Anyways, have a great year ahead and keep on writing compelling blogs! Looking forward to your next posts! :)
