I briefly mentioned in my Golden Globes red carpet recap that lifted-hem dresses were having a moment. Why wear seven hundred dollar shoes if no one can see them, right? So tea-length dresses were all over the awards show (and the many after parties).
It's a hard length to pull off, I'll admit, but I love it when it's done right. Sarah Paulson's Marchesa dress would have been too poofy and prom queen had it been a floor-length gown, but the lifted hem makes it more classy and serious, more age-appropriate for someone who is indeed no longer in high school.
Some critics have bashed Alexa Chung's dress, but I love her vintage style and I think she rocks the hemline. Jaime King's Prabal Gurung dress has more of a pencil shape to it, which looks lovely on her and could translate very well to the everywoman's wardrobe, if she dares to take on the trend.
Never let your heels go unnoticed again with a shin-skimming skirt!

The stars were out in full swing for the first major awards ceremony of the season, the 71st Golden Globe Awards. Though the ceremony was interesting to say the least (I for one was quite shocked by some of the award recipients) the women looked absolutely gorgeous.
Best actress winner Amy Adams and 12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong'o were some of the celebrities who sported ravishing reds.
Other celebrities opted for bright colors on the red carpet. Lena Dunham in particular stuck out to me in her glowing yellow Zac Posen gown as one of the best dresses of the night. It was a daring risk that paid off well, and there's nothing I love more than watching a girl on the worst-dressed list from last year carry herself over to the best-dressed list. That Vogue cover is doing her some good, fashion-wise!
Some women kept their colors simple and chic with black & white ensembles that were sharp and graphic. Allison Williams (it's a good night for the Girls girls, it seems!) was one of my favorites, in an edgy Alexander McQueen dress. Her matching white and black eye makeup was a great touch that really accentuated the graphic quality of her gown.
I noticed that a few women opted for shorter dresses on the occasion. Sarah Paulson and Emma Stone wore tea-length dresses that hit right on the shins, while many stars (including Michelle Dockery and Sandra Bullock) donned dresses that lifted slightly in the front to show off their shoes. My kind of dress!

First-time Golden Globe goer Margot Robbie absolutely stunned in a cream Gucci dress that was accentuated with dazzling crystals. Margot is beautiful and charming - her presenting piece was adorable - and I look forward to see what she will wear to the other big night in Hollywood fashion, the Oscars.

This look could have been a lot worse, I'll give you that, but it was probably my least favorite styling of the evening. Amber Heard wears a perfectly lovely Atelier Versace gown, but her "Angelina Jolie Leg" pose makes it less classy and more, well, you know. And the hairdo is atrocious. Glamorous Old Hollywood curls could have transformed this look into Golden Globes perfection, but as it is, Heard looks like a high school prom goer.

Julianna Margulies looked elegant and Hollywood-perfect in her black Andrew Gn gown with gold accents. I love the shape of the dress, her hair and makeup, everything. Not the most risky fashion choice, but sometimes a classic pays off just as well.

I absolutely loved Sandra Bullock's Prabal Gurung dress, but Zoe Saldana's, not so much. Zoe's a fashion risk-taker and isn't afraid of an unconventional dress choice, but I'm afraid this dress has just too much going on - embellishments, a funky neckline, sheer skirt, and so on. If the bodice of the dress had continued into a full gown skirt, I would have loved it, but as it is I just don't get it.

Michelle Dockery rarely misses a beat on the red carpet, and this Oscar de la Renta dress is no exception. The golden sparkle of the dress makes her shine, and her hair and bright red lipstick perfectly accentuate the sweet gown. Easily one of my favorites.
The Verdict:
My vote for best-dressed? I cannot decide between Lupita Nyong'o, who I thought absolutely killed it in her Ralph Lauren caped dress, and Michelle Dockery.
Worst dressed...probably Zoe Saldana. It could have been a hit, but it fell short for me.
Ah, the Golden Globes. The official kick-off to awards season, the Golden Globes is the slightly less formal sister to the Oscars, but that isn't to say the dresses are not as daring. There were plenty of hits tonight, and many improvements from last year (the host, however, seriously needs some updating). Let us look at some of the most stunning -and surprising- looks of the night.
Baring it All- As a fan of Showtime's Homeland I was proud to see Clare Danes win for her riveting role in the show, and even more delighted to see how well she looked in this J. Mendel gown.
The Avant-Garde Girl- You can count on Evan Rachel Wood to take a daring fashion risk on an otherwise safe red carpet, and this Gucci number certainly is worth the risk.
Most Overrated- I've never really understood the Angelina Jolie appeal. Yes, she is gorgeous, but she always looks so bored and unamused by everything. This Atelier Versace dress would have been stunning had that red band at the top disappeared, but it is nothing special.
The Triumphant Win- Another woman I'm glad to see win: Octavia Spencer. Her role in The Help made the movie fantastic, and she looked beautiful in a pale lavender Tadashi Shoji dress.
Questionable Taste- Had Natalie Portman taken the side hump off of her Lanvin gown, I maybe would have liked it, but that asymmetric bump is just too distracting.
One of a Kind- Tilda Swinton is certainly the only one who can pull off this Haider Ackermann skirt suit like she does, but damn, aren't we glad that she does!
You and Madonna Should Have Traded- Someone needs to tell Lea Michele that she should take advantage of more youthful dresses while she still can! Lord knows Marchesa has plenty of poofball dresses that would be more flattering for such a young actress.
She's Back, Baby! Last year I sadly announced that Nicole's reign as a fashion force had ended. Today I am back to say that this Aussie has come out of fashion retirement and has stunned us all with this gorgeous Versace number.
Swingin' Sixties Girl- Zooey Deschanel, everyone's favorite quirky girl, wowed in black and green Prada and a hairstyle evoking, as my mom pointed out, the styles of the sixties TV show That Girl. It's nice to see Zooey more coquette than kooky and I hope she continues with this retro-glam style.
Most Improved- Julianne Moore has finally stepped away from Lanvin and into Chanel Haute Couture and the result is perhaps one of the most beautiful looks of the night. The simple waves of her hair, the fabulous peplum skirt, the emerald earrings- everything looked flawless. I have always adored Julianne as an actress and as a woman, and I am just so glad to finally see her in a gown that accurately depicts her as the beautiful woman she is. Here's to you, Julianne!
