All My Favorite Outfits From This Year
Now that I've recapped the biggest fashion moments of 2016, it's time to reflect on a personal style level. Each and every year, I feel like I'm honing in on my own unique brand of style a little bit more, and this year I definitely experimented with new trends, brands, and looks. I branched out with new brands, explored areas of downtown Los Angeles to use as backdrops, and focused on presenting a stylish, elevated, yet still realistic look to share with all of you. What a year it's been
2016 has been an interesting year, to say the least. I graduated from USC (yay!) but am still working on that whole job thing (not yay). Superhero movies were meh this year, but at least Rogue One and Arrival were good. We elected a man with a spray tan and bad hair as president, and we lost a lot of fashion icons and generally wonderful celebrities this year, so yeah, it's been a weird year with lots of ups and downs.

Merry & Bright!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! I know I did! As always, it was a lovely weekend filled with friends, family, and food, so obviously it was lovely. I'm off on a little road trip this week, so I may only update the blog once this week, but I'll keep you all updated on my Facebook page so you know when the latest Fashion Barbie content hits.

Music for dancing around the Christmas tree
One of the best parts about the holiday season is the Christmas music that takes over radio stations. I'm obsessed with Christmas music, and starting the day after Thanksgiving, you can find me blasting Mariah Carey classics and Nat King Cole.A gift ready to lead Santa's sleigh via Studio DIY |
Prepare for pretty presents!
I love Christmas presents, but not for the reason you think. Yes, receiving chic items off your wish list from loved ones is exciting, but I love shopping for presents even more than I love getting them, and most importantly, I love wrapping presents!
Getting in the holiday spirit!
The Fashion Barbie is finally home for the holidays! Lucky for me, my family recognizes that I am the #1 Christmas Elf around, and leaves the tree unornamented until I come home each year. Once I'm home, I blast some Christmas music (preferably Mariah Carey's iconic "All I Want For Christmas Is You"), sip some hot chocolate, and get to work!

When the weather is gray, bring the color!
I've been told that it's quite cold in most of the country right now. It's raining here in Los Angeles so I feel your pain. This time of year, in the dead of winter, it's easy to make like the gloomy weather and stick to dull grays and somber blacks, but I have a challenge for you: combat the dreary weather with a colorful coat!Stand out on New Year's Eve |
Don't be afraid to dazzle!
Sequins tend to make their way into every New Year's Eve soiree, but who says the clothes should have all the fun? This holiday season, I'm daring you to step up your party makeup game with a daring, dazzling beauty look! That's right, I'm telling you to add some glitter to your NYE look.Balenciaga | Michael Kors Collection | Emilio Pucci | Miu Miu |
For a fresh new year
We're all pretty much ready for 2016 to be over. Luckily, the color experts at Pantone are already looking to 2017, and they have an optimistic view for the new year.Photo via Chanel |
Chanel heads home for it's annual Métiers D'Art collection
Rome. Mumbai. Dallas. Over the years, Karl Lagerfeld has taken the annual Chanel Métiers D'Art collection (the brand's version of Pre-Fall) all around the world, celebrating the fashions of cultures near and far while also displaying the fine craftsmanship of Chanel's artisan partners. But this year, Chanel stayed close to home, with guests travelling to the newly-renovated Ritz Paris for lunch and a runway show (and a party the night before, of course). The art of layering
Bodysuits were a big trend this spring, and based on a recent trip to The Grove, they're just as popular for fall, too! I have quite a few bodysuits in my wardrobe, but all of them are rather daring, with either off-the-shoulder cuts or deep necklinces. In the summer, all you have to do is pair with a flowy skirt or cute cut-off shorts, and you're good to go, but colder temperatures call for more layers.Find the perfect present at every price point
Ideally, I would buy everyone Christmas presents from Gucci (gotta have my family repping the hottest brand of the moment) and perhaps some latest-generation Apple products, but alas, I am living that broke 20-something life. It will be some time before I look at Sugarfish as a non-luxury sushi destination or scoff at the idea of purchasing something on sale. I wish I could find lavish presents for my family and friends, but yours truly is a girl on a budget, so I have to find gifts that feel luxurious but don't make my bank account scream in horror.image via 100 Layer Cake |

PLUS a Black Friday Sale roundup!
What better way is there to celebrate the week of Thanksgiving than going to The Pie Hole and getting some delicious pumpkin pie? Seriously, there is nothing better! I'm heading home today for a weekend of delicious food and hanging out with family, but I wanted to share my festive outfit post with you all today!Alice + Olivia dress | Kaibosh sunglasses | Isabel Marant earrings Tory Burch coat | Mallet & Co. purse | Marc Jacobs boots |
Designer clothes on sale? Yes, please!
I'm coming at you guys with a BONUS blog post this week because Net-A-Porter has started their Cyber Monday Sale early and you just cannot wait around with a sale like this. There are thousands of discounted designer pieces on sale, and they're gonna go fast, so run, don't walk to your nearest computer (duh, you should already be on one if you're reading this!) and check out the sale now!
Who says summer clothes should have all the fun?
I rejoiced when I opened my weather app and saw that it would be in the 70s all week long. This is how nonexistent fall has been in Los Angeles. Relative to how hot it's been, low 70s equals sweater weather, so I took my chance and wore my brand new open-shoulder sweater from Romwe while walking around the neighborhood.Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss |
Visual inspiration for a stylish end of 2016
Let's be real, 2016 sucked. Yeah, there are a few more weeks left to make it up, but I'm calling it: 2016 was a bit of a bummer. One could argue that graduating college should be looked at as a positive, but as someone who both loves learning and hasn't found a job yet...yeah, I'd be happy to stay in school for a little while longer. On the bright side, I did move back to Los Angeles and am living the cool semi-adult life in the Arts District, so it wasn't all bad.
First Lady Michelle Obama in Atelier Versace for Vogue, photographed by Annie Leibovitz |
Fashion Icon. Role Model.
Vogue sure knows how to time a cover. As the nation was still recovering from the shock of Tuesday's election results, the fashion magazine released its December cover featuring First Lady Michelle Obama. Following the frustrations of last week, I've been thinking a lot about the past eight years and how much I'm going to miss seeing the Obamas in the White House, and Michelle Obama in particular. Now is the time to take a stand
It's been a tough week. I am dumbfounded by the results of this week's election, and it has been a frustrating wake up call for people who think that racism, sexism, and hatred are only in the hearts of a few outlying individuals. These issues run wide and deep, to the point where it is okay for our country to elect a man to the highest office in the land even though he and his followers have been proponents for some truly unspeakable behavior.
Prepping for our first episode! |
Check out my new podcast!
Hey, fans of The Fashion Barbie! If you've followed this blog for a while, you'll know that I'm as obsessed with popular culture as I am with fashion. TV shows, movies, celebrity gossip, you name it; I love it all. In fact, my friend Steph and I love talking about all things entertainment so much that we decided to start our own podcast/video series called White Rice. And the first episode is finally up!Time to party via Urban Outfitters |
Outfits for every Holiday party on your calendar!
Holy cow, it's November! Somehow we've made it to the final stretch of this very veerrry long year and now it is time to prep for celebrations (well, hoping that a certain female candidate wins her election; if not, bye, it was nice knowing all of you...) Anyway, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and everything in between are well within sight now, so it's time to start prepping those holiday outfits!

Wishful thinking
Can you believe it's November? I for one cannot. This month has been seriously crazy; I moved back to Los Angeles, am starting a new entertainment podcast, and am still looking for a job #HireTheFashionBarbie. And now it's November! Ahhh!
Me as Chanel No. 3 from Scream Queens |
Or should I say, Happy Chanel-o-ween!
Happy Halloween, everybody! Hope your weekend was full of more treats than tricks, and that tonight is fun too! As you can see, I kept in theme with last year's costume by going as the earmuff wearing, emotionally unavailable Chanel No. 3 from Scream Queens. Let's be real, it was mainly an excuse to buy earmuffs and a furry jacket!
Live colorfully!
When it comes to documenting a clutch outfit, a gorgeous backdrop is just as important as the clothes you're wearing. Luckily for me, downtown Los Angeles has no shortage of cool painted walls to photograph, and this week we hit up a famous one in my new neighborhood to use as the background for one of my go-to outfit combinations.
Gucci print wool-felt cape |
Cloak yourself in style
There's just something about a cape that screams style, you know? Maybe it's the fact that they're less common than they used to be in the good ol' days (meaning the 1500s) and that they immediately bring to mind images of a brave heroine racing through the woods, trying to outrun a vicious wolf or dragon, but capes are cool. Sure, they don't allow for a full range of arm motion, but who cares when you're going for a capital L #Look?
Channeling my inner Cher Horowitz
It should come as no surprise that Cher Horowitz, Alaïa-wearing queen bee of Beverly Hills, is one of my top film fashion icons. From her classic yellow plaid skirt suit to her fabulous takes on preppy schoolwear, the style of Clueless's heroine is just as influential now as it was in the 90s.
How Los Angeles Does Autumn
Halloween weekend is next week. According to Starbucks, after that, it's Christmas (or at least time for holiday cups) and yet here I am in LA, still wearing my cutoffs and sweating much more than anyone should outside of a gym. Oh, how I yearn to trade my iced lattes for cinnamon-spiced hot chocolates and cozy up in an oversized sweater! The weather has other plans; it hit 90° on the day of this photoshoot and is supposed to be unseasonably warm all weekend.

Rock on!
Classic rock is having a moment. For the past two weekends, thousands ventured to Indio not for Coachella but for Dessert Trip (also known as "Old-Chella") where dozens of classic rock lineups performed for audiences young and old. Bob Dylan just won a Nobel prize for literature. And in the fashion world, band tees from classic bands like The Rolling Stones and The Who are everywhere.
Back in the City of Angels, that is!
Maybe you noticed my cryptic Instagram and Snapchat posts this weekend, and maybe you figured it out already but...I'm back in Los Angeles! That's right! After a five-month stint at home following graduation, your favorite Fashion Barbie is back in La La Land where she belongs.

It Girl faves at half the cost!
Revolve has quickly become one of my favorite online shopping destinations. They feature blogger favorite brands like NBD, Tularosa, and The Jetset Diaries and have a cool, laid-back California aesthetic that I personally cannot get enough of. To make it even harder to resist spending all my money on their cute clothes, Revolve is having a huge sale and plenty of chic styles have been added! I've rounded up some of my favorites below, but you can shop everything here.
Leandra Medine of Man Repeller wearing Prada jacket, Comme des Garçons shirt, Carven skirt, and Miu Miu shoes |
The perfect outfit for transitional weather
Leandra Medine is one of my all-time style icons, and when she featured this look on her website, Man Repeller, I full on freaked out. Like, how good is this outfit? Not only is she wearing the Carven skirt I featured on my September Wish List (AND the Comme des Garçons top I featured in March!), but she's paired them with a red and blue quilted Prada jacket like a private school girl caught in the rain. She questioned the staying power of Blair Waldorf style when describing this look, who is of course now and forever a fashion influence—at least for me—and I just adore this outfit.

How to be the talk of the costume party
Picking a Halloween costume can be a little stressful. I hate purchasing tacky polyester-based costumes from Party City, but making mine from scratch can be a real pain, too. And then there's always the fact that people might not get it and then you have to spend all night explaining who you are because the people surrounding you are uncultured pigs. JK random people, but seriously, it's the worst when people don't understand your costume reference.
Madewell et Sézane |
The Cool Girl collaboration you need to shop now
We all know that I adore Madewell. Their relaxed, classically cool pieces are easy to wear and reasonably affordable, and I love that their pieces can mix and match with pretty much anything. Every month I have to keep myself from buying everything when perusing their new arrivals, and let me tell you, that is not easy. Madewell is basically perfect.

Is Vogue out of touch when it comes to their views on bloggers?
On Tuesday morning, my Instagram and Twitter feeds were blowing up with angry posts, and it wasn't because of the Presidential Debate. The culprit was Vogue, who posted a recap of Milan Fashion Week that included a pretty harsh discussion about the role of bloggers at fashion shows.

Get a not-so-basic sweater this fall
You guys, fall has officially arrived. Time to bust out the knit sweaters, boots, and Halloween DCOMs (who's up for a Hocus Pocus watching party soon?) because the leaves are changing and pumpkin spices are filling the air!

Top trends from London and Milan
Fall may have just started yesterday, but we're already looking forward to spring in the fashion world. London Fashion Week has come and gone (so has NYFW, if you missed that recap) and we're in the midst of Milan Fashion Week. There's some great stuff coming from across the pond, so here's the rundown on the top trends and collections from the past week:

Everything for a stylish fall!
There are so many things in this world that I want to try, so many styles I've yet to wear, so many new products I need to test out. It's impossible to try out everything, but thank goodness for subscription boxes like the PopSugar Must-Have Box that help me sample some of the latest trends and products.

Is Emmys fashion better than the Oscars?
A bold question, perhaps, but hear me out: we are in Peak TV mode, where the quality (and quantity) of television has hit an all-time high. Game of Thrones is on par, technically and story-wise, with the most epic of film series. Transparent, Master of None, and Orange is the New Black are dealing with issues of racial and gender diversity in a way that the film industry has been slow to do (#OscarsSoWhite ring a bell?). The People v. O.J. Simpson: An American Crime Story gave viewers the chance to reconsider their stances on characters made popular by the media twenty years prior, and confronted the myth of "reality" television and media construction head-on.

Give me all the clothes
New York Fashion Week always leaves me with some raging envy, both for the people who get to go to see the shows and for the clothes themselves. Yes, some of the clothes are available to purchase right away thanks to see-now-buy-now collections and preorder sites like Moda Operandi, but even then, I'm an unemployed twenty-two-year-old with very limited funds. I wish I could buy all the Proenza Schouler and Rodarte in the world, but alas, unless you Mulleavy sisters are reading this and want to gift me some fairy princess garments, I'll be admiring these clothes from afar. Life is so unfair.

Weave your way into this trend
During my LA trip this past weekend I spent a whole day shopping, and I couldn't help but notice an abundance of jacquards, brocades, and other tapestry-style fabrics. In a world of Gucci-inspired grandma chic, furniture fabrics were bound to make a comeback, but this is far from the style of the curtain-wearing Von Trapp children.

Fighting on from the Lone Star State
Hope everyone had a lovely Labor Day Weekend full of sun and relaxation! As for me, my dad and I headed to the Lone Star State for a fun weekend of football and barbeque. Other than DFW Airport, I've never been to Texas before, so I was quite excited to head there to watch my Alma Mater take on the Alabama football team at the Dallas Cowboys stadium. Okay, so the game didn't go over too well, but it was still fun!

Everything to make this your most stylish fall ever
Happy Labor Day, loves! Hope you're all celebrating the holiday with a glass of rosé and an ocean view. Now that the official end of summer has come around, it's time to look forward to fall and start stocking up on new season essentials. I've rounded up eight of the biggest fall trends and curated my favorite pieces so you can shop all the must-have items in one convenient place!
