Meh. 

That's how I felt about the Oscars ceremony of last night. The ceremony, the red carpet, the films...nothing was horrendously horrible, but it wasn't the most memorable of nights either. I suppose it reflects the films that were nominated—yes, they were good films, but none of them were flat-out stunning cinematic experiences like Oscar-nominated films have been in years past. The ceremony felt a little flat, too, to be honest. I love me some NPH but the jokes felt forced. I don't know, it was just...meh.

But never mind the drabness of the ceremony; let's talk about the dresses!

The Trends

Statement necklaces and earrings were everywhere on the red carpet. With most actresses opting for simple but gorgeous gowns, they let the bling do the work of creating a memorable red carpet look. Two of the most talked about jewels? Margot Robbie's zipper Van Cleef & Arpels necklace, and Cate Blanchett's gorgeous turquoise Tiffany necklace.

For the men, navy suits and tuxedos seemed more abundant than the usual black and white tux. Winner Eddie Redmayne was my pick for best-dressed male, but I also loved David Oyelowo's maroon suit.

Cream and pale pink dresses were also a huge trend amongst the women, which I was pleasantly surprised with, seeing as how it was downright pouring all afternoon here in Los Angeles. Usually actresses will opt for darker hues when rain is a possibility, but I guess when you've had your dress chosen for weeks nothing is going to keep you from wearing it.

The Stunning Looks

These were some of my favorite looks from the evening. Sienna Miller rocked an extremely fresh Oscar de la Renta gown from Peter Copping's first collection, unveiled just this week (see the runway version here), and the lace and bow detailings kept this darker dress from losing interest. Marion Cotillard wore Christian Dior Haute Couture as expected, looking glamorous in a simple dress with a fascinating back. For me, the hair, makeup, and lovely earrings make this look what it is.

Jennifer Hudson dazzled in a beautiful yellow column dress with sculptural details. I love the green earrings she added to give the look an interesting touch, but that color is all you need to make a breathtaking statement on the red carpet.

In a shocking turn of events Reese Witherspoon was the one to don Tom Ford for the evening, rather than the usual Julianne Moore (who wore custom Chanel instead). Reese was easily one of my favorite looks of the evening, looking absolutely regal in her off-the-shoulder dress.

Rosamund Pike channeled American Beauty with her rose petal Givenchy gown (I guessed the red correctly! Meanwhile, Nina Dobrev wore my pick for Rosamund to the Vanity Fair After-Party). I think this is her best look from awards season, as it is a beautiful and interesting dress that really captures her personality. Some people had issues with her matching red shoes, but they didn't really bother me.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, starlets dazzled in glittering details. From sequins and embellishments to six thousand individual pearls, these ladies know how to pack a red carpet punch.

Behati Prinsloo looked absolutely marvelous in a red and black Armani Privé gown, proving you don't have to tone your look down if you're only the plus-one. Emma Stone kept up her trend of wearing unexpected but gorgeous dresses on the red carpet with a yellow-green Elie Saab dress. She was another one of my favorite looks of the night. (BTW, Anna Faris stole the dress I had picked for Emma Stone for the red carpet)

Jamie Chung must have been inspired by Katy Perry's recent Super Bowl performance with her firework princess gown. She looks lovely and the dress is a lot of fun. While some people thought Naomi Watts' dress looked like a brick wall, I happened to love it. The halter neckline, the glittery bandeau, and the hair and makeup—it all works so wonderfully well.

And of course, the pearl princess, Lupita Nyong'o: my favorite starlet of the last year, Lupita hasn't been impressing me as much on the red carpet this awards season, but I'm happy to say that she's back on top of her game with a glorious Calvin Klein dress that featured over six thousand pearls. The dress was so ornate that she let it do all the talking, and I absolutely loved this look.

The Questionable Choices

These looks weren't awful, per say, they just weren't my favorite picks of the evening.

I actually think Gwyneth Paltrow looked pretty good, but the weird ruffle on the shoulder was silly and unnecessary for this dress. Either cut the long sleeve or cut the ruffle, and you have a perfect look. Lady Gaga's dress was also near perfect, and I'm so glad to see how far she's come from the days of wearing meat dresses and 12-inch heels, but I just wish the gloves would have stayed in the car. The beautiful Alaïa dress was gorgeous as it was without the distraction that the gloves provided. Like my roommate said, if Amal can't pull it off, no one can.

Scarlett Johansson is another case of just-missed-the-mark with a lovely Versace dress in emerald green and the most horrible hairdo ever. She looks like Miley Cyrus, and Scarlett is so much more beautiful than this look.

I know not a lot of people have been fans of Keira Knightley's pregnancy styles, and her Valentino dress is no exception. It's a lovely dress but it washes her out, and I really wish she had worn her hair up. As is, the look feels too casual, more suited for a woodland jaunt than the Academy Awards.

Nicole Kidman wore my least favorite dress of the evening. Nothing about it works, from the color to the shape to the stupid contrasting red belt. It doesn't flatter her skintone or do anything, really, and it's just unfortunate because Nicole Kidman is gorgeous. This dress just isn't helping.

Lindsey's Favorites

In a year where I felt no zealous passion for a particular Oscar-nominated film to take the cake, I suffered the same general indifference when it came to selecting my favorite looks of the evening. No one really stood out to me and made me gasp or go, "THAT is a red carpet dress!" No one looked horrible, either. But there were some that dazzled just a little above and beyond, and those would be my favorite looks!

Who were your picks for best-dressed at the 87th Academy Awards?

She donned looks from all the top designers, especially Miuccia Prada. Nyong'o sat front row at fashion week shows and got invites to insider events like the Met Gala and the CFDA Awards. She's not afraid to push the envelope with her fashion choices and she knows what her style is. She was named one of Glamour's Women of the Year, People's Most Beautiful Person of 2014, and has a modelling gig with Estee Lauder. She covered Vogue, Marie Claire, and Glamour, and starred in Miu Miu's Spring ad campaign. She's a fashion It Girl if there ever were one. 

Nyong'o is a rare breed of celebrity that we don't see very often. She's as radiant as the sun and she's constantly aware of the hard work that got her to where she is and how fortunate she is to be where she is. So many people take their positions in life for granted, and it is truly refreshing to see someone who both enjoys her status as celebrity and is aware that it is a fortunate lifestyle.

So with an Oscar and a number of other accolades under her belt, what's next for Nyong'o in the new year? How about a top-secret role in the new Star Wars film? Little has been revealed about the film and we still don't know who Nyong'o will be in the new movie, but a new Star Wars is huge and Nyong'o is going to continue to garner international attention for her part in one of the largest film franchises of all time. She's also the voice of Rakcha in next year's live-action version of The Jungle Book. Between those two big films, Nyong'o is a star that will only continue to rise in 2015.

The biggest names in fashion came out for the annual Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last night,  this time to celebrate the opening of the exhibit on American couturier Charles James. 

To celebrate the iconic eveningwear designer's penchant for the elegant and the dramatic, celebrities donned full skirts in rich fabrics, opulent jewels, and timeless silhouettes. There were plenty of hits and an astonishingly large amount of misses as well, but let's focus on the winning outfits of the evening, shall we?

Arizona Muse, Karolina Kurkova, and Liu Wen all rose to the occasion in dramatic full-skirted ballgowns, all looking lovely in their sophisticated ensembles. The three looked every bit the Charles James girl in such classic evening looks, and I'm sure the late designer would have loved to dress these stylish women.

Other starlets like Blake Lively, Idina Menzel, and Allison Williams opted for form-fitting gowns with dramatic trains that made a bold statement. All three looked elegant, Old-Hollywood, and goddess-like in their custom gowns. I was especially delighted to see Blake back on the red carpet (with husband Ryan Reynolds looking extremely handsome by her side) after an absence at Hollywood events.

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were another well-dressed celebrity couple on the red carpet last night. Stone stunned in a pink Thankoon crop top and wrapped maxi skirt, and her perfectly messy braid was one of my favorite beauty looks of the evening. She looked absolutely gorgeous without looking stuffy.

And in one of the most unexpected looks of the evening, fashion darling Lupita Nyong'o dazzled in a custom Prada dress that seemed to have hopped out of the most recent Great Gatsby film. You know Lupita had fun with the dress and I think that is why it works so well on her - on most others it would have looked cheesy, but on Lupita it is fun and fresh.

Another day, another awards show happening down the block from where I live. But hey, that's LA for you.

While my mom and I did some pre-birthday shopping at the Americana in Glendale, the trendy stars of film and television gathered at the Nokia Theatre at LA Live for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards. It was hosted by Conan O'Brien so I'm sure it was funny, and I think people win things, but let's be real, the awards show isn't about the accolades but rather the fun of it all. And this attitude was well reflected on the red carpet, where stars donned colorful and bold looks for the evening. 

I love seeing celebrities attend these more casual award shows where they can take some fashion risks. Let's see if they paid off!

The ladies of the red carpet embraced spring colors, with dazzling whites and vibrant pastels that also ruled the Spring 2014 runways. Arden Cho and Rocsi Diaz looked absolutely radiant in white dresses that featured fun cutouts.

Iggy Azalea has proved herself to be quite the fashion lover, and I'm proud of her for taking a risk in John Galliano. The proportions of the look were pretty hard to pull off and I don't know if it was the best choice for Azalea, but I like that she tried it out.

Also, I don't know who Pia Mia Perez is and I don't know what her usual style is, but I'm kind of digging her purple gangsta glam get-up. This seems to be one of the most polarizing looks of the night, but I for one don't hate it.

As you all know I have a total style crush on Lupita Nyong'o and her choice for last night's event was no exception. She killed it in a colorful Chanel dress and I loved her electric blue pumps and matching eyeshadow.

Holland Roden and Shailene Woodley both rocked summer leather looks. I love Holland's simple nude Salvatore Ferragamo dress and the way she played up her shoes and lips. Fresh and fun. As for Shailene, she looked equal parts sweet and edgy in an olive green Balmain outfit. The little peek of skin was cute and not a bit too much. Also, I think Shailene wins for best shoes. Those things are awesome.

Rihanna is no stranger to best dressed lists but I find that I often waver between loving and hating her style. Tonight she was totally glam in Ulyana Sergeenko couture. The sweeping silk robe screamed old Hollywood, but the playful bodysuit beneath kept the look young, sexy, and appropriate for an event that is all about having fun.

I also thought Victoria Justice was one of the best dressed in a stunning Versace Atelier mini dress. The pink is perfect for MTV and the detail on the dress is stunning. I also loved how she kept her styling to a minimum so the dress could do the talking. 

Who was your best dressed of the evening and who should have gone home to change?

I can honestly say that this Oscars ceremony was the best I have seen in a long time.

Yes, the awards ceremony had its awkward moments (we're looking at you guys, John Travolta and Jamie Foxx) but everyone looked beautiful, no one was played out by the music, all the winners were deserving of their recognition, and Ellen absolutely killed it as host - she also temporarily killed Twitter with what is now the most retweeted picture ever (beating out the "Four More Years" picture of President Obama and First Lady Michelle).

Seriously though, that selfie was the bomb:

There weren't any real surprises with who won the big awards (other than the fact that American Hustle was shut out completely, maybe) but I was so happy to see people like Lupita Nyong'o (who gave an incredible and inspiring speech), Spike Jonze, and "Let It Go" songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (congrats on the EGOTs!) walk up to the stage to accept the coveted trophy man. Hearing Matthew McConaughey end his acceptance speech with his famous "Alright, alright, alright" was the icing on the delightfully refreshing cake that was this evening's Oscar ceremony.

Asides from the fact that all the winners seemed to be the ones who truly deserved the awards - there were no dark horse winners - the ceremony was just really fun, in a way it had probably tried to be last year with Seth MacFarlane but as you know, failed. Celebrities took selfies and ate pizza while in designer gowns, Ellen poked fun at Jennifer Lawrence for tripping last year (and again on the red carpet tonight) and collected money to pay for said pizza in Pharrell's now infamous hat. The musical performances were all great, from Pharrell's colorful dancing number to Vampire Weekend's Ezra playing guitar alongside Karen O to, well, Bono.

The ceremony's theme of the night - heros - was incredibly appropriate, as the films this year celebrated heroes of all shapes and sizes, with both superpowers and everyday abilities. There was a triumphant feel to the award show and the winning films - "Let It Go" is the ultimate jam for anyone who has ever felt like they don't belong; Gravity and 12 Years a Slave are both (but in very different ways) stories of perseverance and survival; Dallas Buyers Club a tale of being absolutely who you are and learning to live life despite its adversities.

Truly an inspirational and unforgettable year for film. It's certainly been a while since I have felt so pleased with the events of the Oscars, from the winners to the ceremony to of course, the dresses...

The trend of the evening came in two colors: nude and navy. The majority of women wore soft, blush-hued gowns like the gorgeously detailed Armani Prive dress that Cate Blanchett wore. Kate Hudson looked phenomenal in a cream dress by Versace Atelier and was perhaps one of the best-dressed women of the evening. Kristen Bell looked every bit the princess in a sweeping Roberto Cavalli gown. A number of other actresses wore nude colors, but these three were the best of the bunch by far. Some looks were a bit too nude, in that the ladies needed to spruce up their lipstick or have some sort of pop of color to make their looks stand out.

Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams, bost nominees for best actress, wore stunning shades of midnight blue to the ceremony. The color is rich and statement-making on its own, and both women let their gorgeously-colored dresses do the talking.

The color trends of the evening carried into menswear as well. Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, and Ryan Seacrest wore cream colored suit jackets, while Kevin Spacey wore an elegant navy tux. Aside from the unconventional shorts tuxedo that Pharrell wore, the men were looking excellently dapper!

These guys were the looks that stirred the most controversy when watching the red carpet at the sorority house and on the internet.

Charlize's invisible straps were just kind of odd and many people said they her dress totally looked like the horns Maleficent has (would have been perfect if Angie had worn this though!). I personally thought Emma Watson's edgy look, but my sisters were not fans of the messy ponytail. I think it looked strange from certain angles, but when I saw it I liked it.

Kerry Washington looked absolutely radiant - seriously, she was on her A-game for hair and makeup - and its hard to criticize what a woman wears while pregnant, but the shape of her dress was just a bit odd, and I hated that weird pin thing. Also, the dress was wrinkled. Always a bad look.

Lastly, I liked Anna Kendrick's look but thought the red detailing at the waist was weird. I would have liked it better in black, or white even. The maroon color was just not doing it for me.

On an evening of gorgeous dresses, newcomer and Oscar winner (!!!) Lupita Nyong'o stood above the rest as the night's best dressed starlet. She's dazzled all season long but tonight was truly her Cinderella moment.

In an aptly-colored baby blue dress by Prada, Nyong'o floated down the red carpet and captivated everyone with her stunning looks and her lovely and humble acceptance speech. She kept the accessories light, wearing only gold rings and bracelets - including a ring with her family's totem on it. She said that the color of her dress reminded her of Nairobi. I love that her outfit had so many personal touches to it. I even loved her headband, which people had mixed opinions on.

And of course, her Clarins lipgloss which she memorably handed to Ellen, is probably being sold out as we speak. If you were wondering why Lupita's been the one everyone's been talking about, hopefully your questions have been answered after watching her tonight. Her speech was eloquent as they have been all awards season, and she really is the type of celebrity you want to root for.

My favorite Lupita moment of the night, though? Seeing her (and Amy and Meryl) get down to Pharrell when he performed "Happy". Girl can jam, and I loved that her dress could move with her dancing!

Listening to her eloquent and charming acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress in a Film at Saturday's SAG Awards, I couldn't help but to fall in love with the rising star that is Lupita Nyong'o. 

The breakout star of the critically-acclaimed 12 Years a Slave has wowed us all with her on-screen performance; her flawless fashion choices have landed her on countless best-dressed lists; her stunning beauty has landed her a Miu Miu campaign. She's also a Yale graduate and speaks with the utmost articulacy. 

Basically, if you aren't a fan of Lupita by now, you should be.

With a well-deserved SAG win under her belt now, Nyong'o has the Academy Awards to look forward to, where she's been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. I am already excited to see what fabulous dress she will wear to Hollywood's biggest night.

In February, Nyong'o will star in Non-Stop alongside Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore, and I know we will be seeing her in many more films to come. This girl has true star power.

Nyong'o's style is simple and streamlined - she prefers bold, attention-grabbing colors over busy prints or embellishments, and you can always count on her to arrive in a unique silhouette; she rocks a cut-out dress like no other.

A personal favorite of mine (and every best-dressed list, for that matter) is the Ralph Lauren cape dress she wore to the Golden Globes. She looked like a regal queen, and let the vibrant red of her dress - along with matching lipstick - do the talking. The look was so stunning that Amy Adams had to forgo the red cape that she had originally planned on wearing over her dress.

Talk about rocking the red carpet!

Spring collections are slowly trickling into retail stores, and along with that comes the unveiling of the Spring 2014 Ad Campaigns. 

It's always a treat to see how ad campaigns contribute to the tone of a collection, and they often make the clothes come alive. And from a photographer scandal to new talents landing big campaigns, this round of campaigns was indeed quite lively.

Below are some of my favorites:

Let's start things off with one of the more interesting ad campaigns of the season. Miley Cyrus' status as It Girl continues into 2014 as the new face of Marc Jacobs. The images are dark and moody, reflecting the Victorian-inspired collection well.

The campaign by David Sims, however, is rather incongruous with past MJ campaigns which are usually photographed by Juergen Teller, who - according to the episode of E! News I was watching yesterday - refused to work with Miley. Apparently not everyone does "Adore You", Miley.

The result - a much moodier, darker campaign than usual. I like it and think it works, but Juergen Teller's refusal to work with Miley makes for an interesting story!

Also helmed by Marc Jacobs (for the last time), the Louis Vuitton campaign for Spring 2014 celebrates the seventeen-year-reign of Jacobs before Nicolas Ghesquiere takes the reigns. The campaign features the women who inspired Marc Jacobs for his Louis Vuitton collections, including Sofia Coppola, Gisele Bundchen, Catherine Deneuve, and Fan Bingbing.

The photographs are beautiful, a fitting last campaign for the man who transformed the French leather house into a fashion powerhouse.

We'll miss Marc at Louis Vuitton, but I for one am so excited to see Nicolas Ghesquiere back in the game and know he will do marvelous things.

The fiery-haired Karen Elson stuns in a sexy Jason Wu gown for the designer's latest ad campaign, shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vindoodh Matadin. Shot at NYC eaterie Indochine, Elson makes her Hollywood-glam dress look as appetizing as the food on the table.

I love Elson's dynamic pose, the punchy wallpaper, and the fact that Wu himself joins the supermodel for a fashionable bite to eat in another photo for the campaign. Perfection.

Miuccia Prada continues her tradition of featuring up-and-coming Hollywood starlets with Spring 2014, which showcases 12 Years a Slave actress Lupita Nyong'o, along with Bella Heathcote, Elle Fanning, and Elizabeth Olsen.

The pastel-heavy collection gets some edge with the way these girls wear their Miu Miu clothes with confidence. This campaign is a total win for me.

Alexa Chung has a tendency to turn everything she touches to glistening gold, and her latest ad for Longchamp is no exception. Chung is cool and adventurous in her light blue convertible and clutching to her vibrant yellow Longchamp bag.

I love the feel of this image, love the way it makes you want to hop in the passenger seat and join Alexa Chung on an exciting road trip.

And of course, one my favorite campaigns of Spring 2014 is one of the most straightforward. Lady Gaga poses in Versace as a Donnatella doppelganger and looks beautiful doing so. Gaga's pose is seductive and sexy, just like a Versace dress. Simple, yes, but powerful.

What have your thoughts been on the Spring 2014 ad campaigns?

The stars were out in full swing for the first major awards ceremony of the season, the 71st Golden Globe Awards. Though the ceremony was interesting to say the least (I for one was quite shocked by some of the award recipients) the women looked absolutely gorgeous.

Best actress winner Amy Adams and 12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong'o were some of the celebrities who sported ravishing reds. 

Other celebrities opted for bright colors on the red carpet. Lena Dunham in particular stuck out to me in her glowing yellow Zac Posen gown as one of the best dresses of the night. It was a daring risk that paid off well, and there's nothing I love more than watching a girl on the worst-dressed list from last year carry herself over to the best-dressed list. That Vogue cover is doing her some good, fashion-wise!

Some women kept their colors simple and chic with black & white ensembles that were sharp and graphic. Allison Williams (it's a good night for the Girls girls, it seems!) was one of my favorites, in an edgy Alexander McQueen dress. Her matching white and black eye makeup was a great touch that really accentuated the graphic quality of her gown.

I noticed that a few women opted for shorter dresses on the occasion. Sarah Paulson and Emma Stone wore tea-length dresses that hit right on the shins, while many stars (including Michelle Dockery and Sandra Bullock) donned dresses that lifted slightly in the front to show off their shoes. My kind of dress!
