The Best And Worst Dresses Of The Oscars

March 15, 2024

The 2024 awards season has finally come to a close, Oppenheimer took home the big trophies, and the Hollywood Blvd. In-N-Out has been overrun with Paul Giamatti and plenty of other well-dressed celebs hankering for a late-night burger after months of squeezing into tuxes and gowns. And speaking of gowns...

We must talk about the gowns. There were good gowns, bad gowns, boring gowns, and even a pair of pants that looked like a gown! So let's break down my favorite looks and the ones that disappointed on the Oscars red carpet.

The 2017 Met Gala Red Carpet

Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between

When this year's Met Costume Institute exhibition theme was announced, I was ecstatic. Rei Kawakubo, the iconic Comme des Garçons designer, is one of the most innovative minds in fashion, and her avant-garde styles rarely get the red carpet moments they deserve. To put it plainly, Comme des Garçons is not for the faint of heart, with wild shapes and dramatic silhouettes that few have the confidence to pull off. But surely the red carpet set at the Met Gala would be game?

Selena Gomez Makes The Case For Matching

The preppy way to do festival style

Hey guys! I'm so sorry that posting has been a bit inconsistent lately. I try to post something every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but I've been quite busy with the new job and lots of other things going on, so my blog may be a bit weird in terms of schedule for the next few weeks. I promise I'll try to get back to my normal posting schedule soon, though!

Anyways, as I'm sure you know, Coachella Weekend One was this past weekend and the festival fashion was phenomenal! From the many Revolve parties to some seriously chic style on the festival grounds, there were too many good looks to choose from. I don't have time to do a full Coachella style recap, but I did want to share one of my favorite outfits from the weekend.

Selena Gomez has transformed into quite the style queen, and I adored her cheery flower print HVN dress with matching kerchief that she wore in Indio this past weekend. Paired with easygoing sneakers, this look is a fashionable take on festival style that is cute, practical, but not bordering on swimsuit territory, which is the direction many celebrities leaned towards for the music festival.

If you're looking for a more sophisticated alternative to cut-off shorts and crop tops, take Selena's sartorial cue and opt for a bright floral dress, and coordinate pieces too! It makes anyone look instantly put-together.

The 2017 Oscars Red Carpet

February 27, 2017

Mahershala Ali, Emma Stone, and Viola Davis pose with their Oscars (I'm not missing anyone from this photo, am I...?)

It's Hollywood's biggest night!

What was shaping up to be a pretty run-of-the-mill Oscars ceremony became so much more in the final moments, when one of the La La Land producers (on stage, accepting the award for Best Picture) paused and said, "JK, this award is supposed to go to Moonlight!" (I'm paraphrasing but you get it). At first I wondered if this was a consolation acknowledgement, in the vein of Adele's nod to Beyonce at the Grammys, but no, the La La Land guy held up the winning envelope to the camera and, lo and behold, it read Moonlight.

Wild.

My 2017 Oscars Red Carpet Predictions

What will the nominees wear?

The biggest night in Hollywood is almost here! I've already filled out my ballot with my guesses on who will take home the big awards (get ready to hear La La Land a lot) but now it's time to turn my attention to the red carpet!

Michelle Obama for Vogue

Fashion Icon. Role Model.

Vogue sure knows how to time a cover. As the nation was still recovering from the shock of Tuesday's election results, the fashion magazine released its December cover featuring First Lady Michelle Obama. Following the frustrations of last week, I've been thinking a lot about the past eight years and how much I'm going to miss seeing the Obamas in the White House, and Michelle Obama in particular.

Wearing Talula for Aritzia dress

That red lip classic.

First things first, wow, I did not realize this weekend would be the Official Bashing of Taylor Swift weekend and omg (to quote a certain Yeezus) "that shit CRAY". But let's ignore the drama for now and focus on the clothing, shall we? Don't worry, I'm working on another post regarding the whole ordeal as we speak, or, as you read.

Taylor Swift has been known to go through different style phases, and after a while of experimenting with edgier fashions she has appeared to revert back to her usual style of red lips, cute frocks, and prim handbags. Yeah, there's also plenty of drama over her relationship, but let's save that talk for the tabloids and focus instead on how to get her truly adorable style.

There are several steps to attaining ultimate T-Swift style, so follow along and you will never go out of style either!

1. Know where to shop.

Wearing Reformation dress
One thing I love about Taylor Swift is the fact that she wears a variety of brands and some of them are actually decently affordable for the average person! One of her favorite stores? The Reformation, aka the source of her cute frocks and sun dresses.

2. Find that perfect shade of lipstick

Would Taylor Swift really be Taylor Swift without her signature red lip? She dedicated a whole album to her lipstick, after all! Okay, that may or may not have been the inspiration for Red, but she's got a thing for a crimson pout, so pucker up!

3. Pick a proper purse.

The proper placement of a purse, according to Taylor Swift, is in the crook of the elbow, so it's important to find a handbag with a stiff top handle that can be toted around on the forearm. Here are my recommendations:

4. Surround yourself with fashionable friends.

Famous friends include Cara Delevingne, Ruby Rose, Blake Lively, Gigi Hadid, and Karlie Kloss
Swift's squad is a phenomenon in and of itself. From supermodels to A-list celebs to childhood besties, Taylor Swift knows how to keep good company. Not only do they come together for Pinterest-worthy 4th of July parties and create a bazillion adorable Instagrams together, but they also serve as style inspiration for Swift. You didn't think T-Swift heard about Vetements on her own, did you?

5. Accessorize with a handsome movie star.

Wearing Reformation two-piece
Okay, truth be told, I was obsessed with Tayvin so I'm sad they're broken up (or are they?) but I will admit that Hiddleswift makes for a cute couple too, albeit quickly-moving one. And their world tour romance gives Taylor plenty of opportunities to show off her newest outfits. So go ahead, find your nearest Marvel movie star and reel him in for optimum photo opportunities.

Style Crush | Bella Hadid

July 11, 2016

Style runs in the family.

Gigi may be the one you're more familiar with, but younger sis Bella Hadid is making a name for herself with some very cool street style. She also just walked in a bunch of couture shows, including Chanel, Christian Dior, and Fendi, so clearly Gigi isn't the only Hadid with the modelling bug!

Bella's personal style is very trendy-cool and easy for others to replicate. She's a big fan of skin-hugging bodysuits, bomber jackets, and denim in all shapes and forms. Give her a piece with a 90s vibe and a sexy-yet-laidback feel, and she'll be happy! Plus, she knows how to rock her natural pout and a power ponytail like no other. Chic indeed!

See some of my favorite looks of Bella's, and then how to get the look for yourself!

It's Time to Change How We Write About Female Celebrities

July 8, 2016

Margot Robbie laughing at fuckboi interviewers in this month's Vanity Fair photographed by Patrick Demarchelier

They're people, not fantasies.

No doubt you've heard about the frenzy surrounding the recent Vanity Fair issue; specifically, the interview with cover star Margot Robbie. Since her breakout performance in 2013's The Wolf of Wall Street, she's captivated the world with both her talent and beauty, and with two more blockbusters coming out this summer (that would be The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad) it's clear that Robbie is a sought-after celeb. And yes, I'm pretty sure everyone with eyes can agree that she's a knockout.

Look, I get it. I write about fashion and beauty all day, every day. I care about looks and I like beautiful things and beautiful people. Margot Robbie is one of those people. But even when I'm doing write-ups on celebrity style and red carpet recaps, I work really hard to applaud the talents and personalities of the women wearing the dresses instead of just commenting on the dresses themselves.

Unfortunately, Vanity Fair writer Rich Cohen can't seem to move beyond the looks, and his cover story on Margot Robbie comes off as condescending, misogynistic, and deeply unimaginative. Essentially, the whole piece is a trainwreck.

Patrick Demarchelier for Vanity Fair
Truth be told, if I met Margot Robbie for a lunchtime interview I'd probably freak out too. She's so pretty and cool, I'd scream internally as I'd wait for her to arrive. But by now I've had my fair share of celebrity interactions (ugh, typical LA, amiright?) and really, even if they're beautiful and famous, they're just normal people. You'd think a Vanity Fair writer would be a bit more blassé about being starstruck by now, and yet Cohen writes his profile on Margot Robbie as if he's a 16-year-old boy watching his first R-rated movie, with all the literary sophistication of a teenager too. The thirst could not be more real.

And so Cohen does what any annoyingly awestruck male writer would do to a beautiful woman: he romanticizes Robbie in the most condescending ways, complimenting her looks while simultaneously not-so-subtly bringing her down. "She is blonde but dark at the roots," he writes, suggesting that Robbie's possibly-dyed hair somehow detracts from her beauty, and also assuming that we aren't looking at pictures alongside her at the moment we read the article??? Later on he grills Robbie on her sex scenes, because of course. Other than some questions about getting rid of her accent for roles, there's little talk of Robbie's talents. Just sex and a very dull recap of Robbie's career so far. The article ends with Cohen comparing Robbie to Audrey Hepburn walking away, as in, her ass looks similar to Hepburn's. Classy.

Along with an incoherent rambling about how Australia is "just like America, only different" (seriously, this is a major thesis of Cohen's, and he seems to believe Australia is some distant planet from the past and not, you know, a totally normal country that just happens to be far away?) and some of the most atrocious professional writing I've seen in a long time—seriously, the writing is so dull and unsophisticated, I'm almost more offended by the writing skill of Cohen's than how he speaks of Robbie...almost...the whole piece reeks of immaturity and and unsophistication. I want to read about Robbie's many upcoming film roles, what it was like taking on beloved characters from fiction, what her hobbies are, not some man's creepy musings on her.

Patrick Demarchelier for Vanity Fair
I'm glad this article is getting the flack that it deserves, because it's unfortunately a pretty standard cover story on a female celebrity, and I'm rather sick of it. I've always been an avid magazine reader, but it's always irked me how celebrities are written about, women in particular. There's a weird way in which they are treated as both ethereal goddesses and down-to-earth chill girls, a contradictory mythologizing of women that in the end is just no good.

Writers always talk about the weird quirks of celebrities, their facial expressions, what they eat. I get it, they're trying to make the reader feel like they're sitting there at the lunch table at the new restaurant on Melrose with the starlet, establish a feigned kinship, but I'm telling you, knowing that Emma Roberts orders her cobb salad with dressing on the side but extra bacon* does not do anything to make me feel closely bonded to her. *I don't know if that's how Emma Roberts actually prefers her cobb salads or if she even eats cobb salads.*

This type of image-fashioning may have worked back in the day when the media crafted the personalities of celebrities, but now with social media celebrities are more than capable of controlling their own image. We know a lot about Taylor Swift's personality through her Instagrams and Tumblr account. I don't need some reporter to tell me how she baked a cake for her friend in an effort to make me understand Swift is a nice girl because I already saw it two months ago when Swift tweeted it. I want to hear Taylor talk about something we don't know! I want Margot Robbie to share what it was like to take on the role of Harley Quinn and what acting choices she made! I want Emma Roberts to tell me her favorite Chanel Oberlin lines and if she's ever going to reprise that character because Chanel Oberlin is like, the best. Give me their stories, not just their descriptions.

What's funny is that Cohen actually mentions the media's tendency to turn famous people into narrow archetypes, as if by mentioning this commonality he is above it, while really the whole time he does the exact same thing and attempts to place Robbie in the typical box of "beautiful but not completely unattainable celebrity" so that Cohen can oogle at Robbie while at the same time deluding himself into thinking he even has a shot with her. Sorry, Rich, but fat chance. And now we've all got you "pegged" as a massive creep. Bye.

What do you think about how interviewers write about female celebrities? I want to hear your thoughts!

Style Crush | Zendaya

June 20, 2016

She's just so cool!

Teens these days. Thanks to social media, they're way more connected than ever, learning how to contour and find the latest fashion trends before they learn trigonometry. I've been a fashion lover for a long time, but let's be honest, I had an awkward stage that really only ended once I got to college and learned the importance of eyebrow maintenance (tbh I've still never shaped them, but I do fill them in bc otherwise they're so translucent and blonde that it looks like I don't have eyebrows at all! It's the worst). Anyways, teens are so cool these days, and Zendaya is probably one of the coolest.

You know her from Disney and her burgeoning music career as well as that one time Giuliana Rancic controversially called out her dreadlocks at the Oscars (let Zendaya do what she wants, G!), and she's one style star you should be watching. At 19, Zendaya is having plenty of fun with fashion as she experiments with different styles and trends, and I love when younger celebrities enjoy fashion and try different things instead of dressing like they wish they were 30.

Aside from her killer fashion sense, Zendaya is a poised and elegant young woman who speaks up about important issues, and she just seems like a lovely girl! Anyways, I wanted to share some of my favorite outfits that Zendaya has worn recently!

Check out some of Zendaya's best looks:

Let's Talk About Taylor Swift's New Look

May 6, 2016

The New Taylor Swift wearing Louis Vuitton at the Met Gala

You may have noticed something different about Taylor Swift.

It began early this year, at the Grammys, when she unveiled a new, shorter hairstyle. Many people joked about how similar it looked to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour's iconic bob, not knowing just how much influence Wintour had on Swift's evolving look.

Anna, is that you? Taylor Swift at the Grammys (left) and the Vanity Fair Oscar Party (right)
The new 'do was a point of conversation, but it wasn't too drastic. Just a more mature take on Swift's typically preppy style.

Then, Coachella happened:

The blonde bob was now platinum, and suddenly the crowd went wild. So wild, that no one realized the jacket was a hint for beau Calvin Harris's new song with Rihanna. Swift, so long a champion of the dirty blonde girls of the world, was now making her look even edgier.

Was it just for Coachella? Was it for her Vogue photo shoot only? It kind of felt like a stunt hairdo, or maybe it could even be a wig, but the past few weeks have proven that the hair—and the edgier style that such a hairdo inevitably brings along with it—is staying.

Here are a few of her most recent street style looks:

Recent street style looks of Swift's (notice the many shades of black)
As you can see, T-Swizzle has gone from modern day Jackie Kennedy to a less annoying Jenny Humphrey, and it's taken a bit of getting used to. I still can't decide what I think about her edgy makeover.

On the one hand, I'm excited that Taylor is experimenting with her style and trying out new things. the 20s are the time to test out different looks and see what makes you feel comfortable and confident. I'm all for outfit experimentation, and Swift has taken this part of her 20s very seriously.

On the other, I really enjoyed her preppy style. It felt like a breath of fresh air set against the Jenners and Hadids of the world, all of whom are pushing the same overdone style, and now Taylor is adopting more and more of these trends. From choker necklaces to sultry dresses, it feels like she's becoming part of a crowd instead of standing out on her own. She's been wearing Vetements, for goodness sake!

Basically, if Taylor Swift is just testing out new styles and having fun, I'm all for it. I just don't want to see her lose her individual sense of style to the trends of Instagram.

What are your thoughts on Taylor Swift's style makeover?
