One drawback to the instantaneous nature of fashion? The lag time between a collection's debut and its actual availability in stores seems longer than ever. Designs that we all gushed over back in February won't make their ways into stores for another month or two, and the resort collections we are seeing now won't be available until November. By the time fall fashion does roll into stores in August, it's old news. I've written my thoughts on the collection, I've seen celebrities and street style stars wear the designs, and I've read every review or thinkpiece on the minutiae of the sartorial references. By August, I've already moved on to gearing up for Spring 2016.
Fortunately with Resort, which celebrates the ability to escape to the Caribbean in the dead of winter, the clothes and styles work just as well during the summer as they do on a tropical vacation. The actual items won't be available for a few more months, but it's never too early to start wearing the trends of resort.

| No. 21 Pre-Fall 2015 (via style.com) |
The trend of the pre-fall collections this time around? Effortless coolness. Everywhere I turn it seems designers are vying to be the coolest clothes makers around, showing current cool girl staples such as turtlenecks, culottes, and sculptural jewelry.
Here are some of my favorite offerings:
Christopher Kane
I love Christopher Kane's constant ability to utilize fabrics and traditional clothe-making methods in new and inventive ways. Lace and embroidery have never looked as badass as they do when Kane gets his hands on them, and for pre-fall he returned to some of his creative staples and reapplied them once again in a more wearable style.
There's a mix of avant-garde looks and minimal, streamlined pieces for the girl who prefers a cleaner look with unexpected details, like stripes of patent leather defining a blazer waist, or a geometric keyhole detail on a dress. One of my favorite looks was the Margot Tenenbaum-esque black fur coat and green turtleneck combo, complete with an athletic-stripe belt in a matching apple green. Equal points quirky and cool, and just the way we like it.
J.W. Anderson
Talk about cool girl fashion bait. The J.W. Anderson pre-fall collection seemed to be designed by the Man Repeller's Leandra Medine (I'm sure she's already got that shearling-block jacket on pre-order) or another fashion-loving street style star. Turtlenecks, flare jeans, mules, and disco-ball earrings? Be still my beating heart, it's almost too much goodness to bare.
Perhaps my favorite styling detail are the too-long contrast shirt sleeves. Sure, they may not be the most practical, but they definitely look fascinating. The whole collection is very 70s, with a bit of 80s and 90s thrown in just for good nostalgia measure, and it hits at all the right points to create an overall commercially-successful look. These pieces are going to come flying off the shelves, mark my words.

Rochas
Rochas always has a certain quirkiness to it that I absolutely adore. There's a cool grandma feeling to oversized coats over full taffeta skirts and the velvet mary janes, right down to the glove print motif, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Rochas is always a bit vintage in all the right ways, and this collection is no exception. I love the blending of deep, rich fall colors with pops of bright hues like that electric blue coat, making sure we never know quite what to expect.
I always think that Rochas is seriously underutilized in editorials and on the red carpet, so hopefully editors and stylists take note of the continual delightful collections as they look to make runway picks.
Stella McCartney
Cool girl looks from the coolest of the cool herself, Stella McCartney continually impresses with her offerings for every collection, major and minor. For pre-fall she's continuing her exploration of the sweater suit, this time with wide legs and asymmetrical cuts, as well as making the beret a fashionable headpiece option again (hooray!). Though McCartney is strictly vegan, she doesn't shy away from faux fur and vegan leather, and she even had a fuzzy bear suit looking thing that I'm sure will be all over editorials come July.
Michael Kors
The best look may be the peacoat and turtleneck paired with a red and white track pant. Anytime a designer makes a sporty staple seem undeniably chic, you have to give them a round of applause. You know street style stars will be emulating this look come fashion week.

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been the biggest fan of Swift's past music or personality. Country pop is so not my thing, and I kind of can't stand when celebrities are continually "surprised" by their own success (see: Jennifer Lawrence). However, Taylor Swift has grown into a confident and empowered young woman and she is owning her fame and success now. She's not crying about boys that got away anymore; she's singing songs about going Amy Dunne on their asses and poking fun at the way the media paints her as a serial dater. She even poked fun at critics who say she can't dance in the video for her hit single "Shake It Off", so haters continue to hate (hate, hate, hate, hate) but know that Taylor really doesn't care what you think. She's totally rocking it no matter what the critics say (also, "Shake It Off" is likely going to bring Swift more Grammy glory come February).
In regards to style, T-Swift definitely upped her fashion game this year. With a new look and plenty of fashion friends like BFF Karlie Kloss, Swift is appearing more glam and modern both on the red carpet and out and about in her new hometown of New York City (Have you seen what she wears to and from the gym??). The crop top has become one of her signature looks and it's never seemed so polished as it does on Swift. She also totally made the matching set trend catch on this summer. Talk about a trendsetter!
Her lob has become one of the hottest hairstyles of the moment, and her signature red lip has never seemed so stylish. She can go from a sexy lace romper at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show to a cat-print Kate Spade frock in a second and look cool and fun in either one. Now that's something that will never go out of style.
So pump up the volume and bust a move to 1989 and just accept the fact that this is Taylor Swift's world now, we're all just living in it. And frankly, I'm okay with that.

What are some of Lively's 2014 highlights? She continued to dazzle as Gucci's spokesmodel in flawless custom creations from the atelier (and she's also a muse for Michael Kors), she launched her boho lifestyle website Preserve, and she's pregnant! She also was the hands-down Queen of Cannes, became besties with Martha Stewart, and is prepping for the release of her latest film, The Age of Adaline, about a woman who never ages (because of course not. Plus, it's an excuse to see Lively in period costumes). So she's had an amazing 2014 and I know 2015 is going to be even better! And she's going to be a mother, which is so exciting, and also that child is going to be beautiful. Ryan Reynolds as your dad and Serena Van Der Woodsen as your mom? That's just unfair!
Style-wise, Lively has perfected her personal blend of Hollywood glamour and modern bohemian. She'll show up in glam Veronica Lake curls and vintage-style dress one day and in a loose-fitting floral frock with wavy tresses the next. She's also totally won with her maternity style. Seriously, a baby bump has never looked this chic!

New York Fashion Week continues with favorites old and new.
Here's the low-down on some of my favorites:
J. Crew

Personal favorite J. Crew is at it again with the preppy-cool shenanigans. The preppy sportswear brand's collection line has basically turned into a presentation of all the outfits Creative Director Jenna Lyons wants to wear come next fashion week. And Jenna Lyons has basically become the Woman We All Want To Be Like.
Because Jenna Lyons is pretty darn cool, if you ask me. She's got great, no-fuss style; not to mention she made her acting debut on Girls this Sunday, which is like the epitome of cool. With her J. Crew isn't just the wardrobe for Ivy League WASPs and polo players - it has become more (ugh, I hate this word) hip. People want to wear J. Crew. Which frankly I so love.
Anyways, their fall collection is full of clothes fit for every type of woman, from the dressed-up feminine lady to the downtown-cool tomboy. There's enough prep in here to stay classically J. Crew, but there's a youthfulness to the clothes that Lyons introduces that has really revitalized the J. Crew brand. I used to only get basics from J. Crew (plain T-shirts and solid skirts, that sort of thing) but now I enter their store looking for statement pieces. That's a big shift in brand identity if you ask me.

The boys at Proenza Schouler are not afraid of a little experimentation, and each collection with them seems to be an intriguing exploration of cuts, textiles, and styles. For fall it appears there has never been a more appropriate time to use the term "Urban Jungle" when describing a collection, as these clothes were made for tackling the bustling streets of New York in style.
Jack and Lazaro are experts of balancing proportions and in mixing unexpected patterns together to achieve a spontaneous but put-together look, if that makes sense.
The use of zebra stripes and other loud patterns in a cool, sophisticated way is probably what the Rodarte girls were striving for for their Spring 2014 collection, but here it works because these sometimes tacky prints have been applied to incredibly modern silhouettes and not to equally as tacky shapes.
And if for some reason you are absolutely loving the whole Birkenstocks and ugly sandals trend (preferably with socks) the designers at Proenza have got you covered - well, at least your feet - with loafers that very closely resemble those water booties they make you wear when you go rafting.

If the boys behind Proenza Schouler are mad scientists of clothing experimentation, then Michael Kors is a distinguished professor of history. You cannot get more classic American clothing than Kors, and you're never going to see him try something that is wayyy out there. And that's okay. Kors has perfected classic American sportswear and it is so darn good, why would he want to change any of that?
For fall Kors stuck mostly with neutrals and soft metallics, but it was always cool and never boring. Kors makes clothes that are sexy without being slutty, historically inspired without being outdated, masculine without losing that feminine edge that makes them so desirable. He may walk a fine line but he never falters, and that is why he consistently makes people fall in love with his clothes.
There's a rich luxuriousness to his clothes but at the same time I wouldn't feel like I had to limit myself from running around in them or going out into nature because I was worried I would spill something on my slip dress or tear my oversized knit sweater. Kors makes clothes that are meant to be worn and lived in which I truly find refreshing. Clothing can be as beautiful as a Renaissance painting but they aren't really valuable if you feel afraid to wear them.
With Michael Kors, these clothes are calling to me, asking me to wear them. And it's taking everything I have to resist them.

Geometry is actually pretty cool when you think about it. Different shapes and patterns can make the coolest clothes; throw color into the mix and you've got loud statement pieces.
Color blocking is back and better than ever with the in-store arrival of Resort 2014 collection items, so whether you're spending your winter break tanning it up in St. Tropez or roughing it in the snow back home, add some POP! to your winter wardrobe and (color)block it out!

I was stumped as for what to do for today's post, so my roommate suggested I do a "Steal Their Style" post and hey, why not!?
This look comes courtesy of the blog Polienne, a personal style blog by a Belgian student/model (so fabulous clothes are already a given). I love Paulien's cool but glamorous style. She'll pair downtown cool ankle boots and fedoras with classic pieces like a leopard print blouse (speaking of, I really need to get one of my own!) so I assembled an outfit inspired by Paulien's fabulous off-duty look.
The best part: every item is under $100, so you really are getting a steal!

Following yesterday's Pink Coat Analysis, I find myself obsessing over another outerwear trend: the return of the cape.
While not always entirely practical (in other words, the lack of sleeves) the cape is a stylish and swinging piece that can serve as an alternative to the typical, classic coat.
And recently, capes have made a remarkable return to the forefront of cold weather fashions, which has gotten me questioning just how practical they can be and thus, how justified I would be if I were to buy one.

This MICHAEL Michael Kors cape in particular has got me swooning. It is classic black and gold and comes in at a perfect price point, which is quite tempting. Plus, it totally goes with anything, including my somewhat preppy style.
But as the fall 2013 runways have shown, any style of lady can wear a cape, from the innocent fairy tale styling at Red Valentino to the witchy vibes at Marios Schwab.
Take a cue from these bloggers and fashion-savvy ladies; there are endless ways to wear the cape!

If Polka Dots were Marc Jacobs' print of 2012, then Stripes are this year's hot print.
The Marc Jacobs Spring 2013 show was, in stark contrast to fall's over-the-top theatrics (fur pimp hats, Winter Wonderland stage, embellished everything), quite simple in its construction and presentation. While Fall was bold in its adventurism, Spring was bold in a clean-cut way. Stripes were the predominant motif of the night, usually in thick contrasting colors (usually black and white) on boxy, geometrically-shaped articles of clothing.
The eye-makeup, the thick black and white stripes- much of the first half of the show had me thinking of 1930s cartoons and a caricature of the thirties in general. If the stripes alone weren't reason enough for me to draw the connection, a sweater with a vintage black and white Mickey Mouse sure did convince me that Jacobs drew upon Popeye's Olive Oil as muse.
Then there were obvious connections between Jacob's Big Top Circus of a Resort Collection and Spring. While muted in tone and theatricality, there were still plenty of clown references- more of a sad, depressed clown though, or even mimes.
Elsewhere, Michael Kors featured all sorts of stripes in his collection. Kors opted for more colors and experimented with stripes of different widths and directions.
Tommy Hilfiger also utilized a plethora of stripes, including both delicate thin stripes in soft fabrics and thick, bold, primary-colored stripes that stand out.
